Dimebag Squeals 2 - NOT pinch harmonics

some pickup and amp combinations are easier to get harmonics on than others. i've got a model 3 that i put a FRED in and its so much easier to get harmonics than any other guitar i own. the SH-13 and the X2N and the Bill Lawrence are easy to get them. using an overdrive on a tube amp makes harmonics easier to get.

Darrel spent a lot of time building his signature sound as well as chops so don't get frustrated that its not coming to you instantly.

My Uberschall has 10 times the gain my Marshalls does. But it's 100 times harder to get "squeals" from it than my Marshall. With my Marshall I could use ANY guitar on any given day I could easily get "squeals" on any string on any fret. I also can do this on my son's Line 6 spider..they're very responsive and "ping" friendly. Not so with the Bogner..you have to hit everything on the head with that amp. I love the tone of that amp but it does impede my ability to play naturally. I'm able to get squeals on acoustic guitars, it's a big part of my style/touch. So amps do play a very big role. IMO!

I never had a probs where pups or string guage is concerned.

Of all the amps I've tried I think Marshall is the most consistant amp when it come to being player friendly when it comes to harmonics, divebombs, pinch harmonics and ect.

Thanks for the replies guys. If it's just a question of practice then that's cool - I just didn't want to practice this, only to later find out there was a really easy way to do it better!
I CAN actually do it, fairly regularly, without too much trouble. It just doesn't have that insane scream Dime always managed to get.

Dime used 2 and 3 fret harmonics alot. They are not over the fret you have to find em. G string is best for those. Use wah to boost harmonics!

Lol this thread got me attempting the dime squeals yesterday needless to say the G popped out of the saddle wwhen i was pulling up on the harmonic, thats cheap floyds for you...

I also found that picking the string diving then pulling up was near impossible to get harmonics from, it might be easier if you pick the string again when your hovering and pulling up on the harmonic...

Dime used a Furman PQ3 parametric eq in his rig which really helps to obtain those squeals

Just an FYI...If your guitar is intonated properly...Those harmonics should always be in the same place...

I was trying to get these squeals last night at band practice. I hit the harmonic when the bar is down, but when I bring the bar back up, all of the other strings start to sound and drown out the squeal. Any tips?

If you are doing it on the g string mute the e-a-d with your index and middle finger and the b-e with your pinkie. Use your ring finger on the harmonic node.

Absolutely. One of the coolest moments of my musical life was getting a reversed divebomb lesson from Joe Satriani in '95. He said he had trouble himself hitting harmonics on the open G at the 2nd fret. So he discovered the same note and higher ones at the other end of the neck..close to the neck pup, or right over the neck pup. He stated not only did those notes seem easier to hit with more consistancy but muting the open strings were naturally easier to do. I do them both ways Dime/Satch, but agree grabbing them like Satch is more consistant. I do this alot so I guess I've practiced this as I go..just like pinch harms.

Back in the day I didn't know Eddie was hitting his harms and squeals 12 frets up from the fretted note. Every string on any fret has this harmonic..even the ones at the 22nd or 24th fret...it just takes some practice locating and nailing them. Either by tapping the 12th octave harm or by lightly touching it. Our Member Gryphon posted a cool trick he discovered on youtube doing his version of this..its pretty cool.
