  • Krankenstein head..

Anyone own or played one of these? What's your thoughts on this, and how close doe it actually come to Dime's sound.

How does it compare to the Randall Warhead in respects to getting Dime's sound.

I know tube vs. SS = apples to oranges, but you know what I mean.
    Thanks

I "can" tell you, the warhead was by far one of the worst sounding amps I've ever had the misfortune of playing for 45 minutes... Hahaha....

I've never heard or played either the Randall or the Krankenstein myself.
That must be the reason the Warhead was discontinued and Dime went looking elsewhere...

Apparently the limited X2 version of the Warhead is Dime tone in a box.

I have played a Krankenstein and it was very thin and buzzy. I could not find a good setting on it.

I would like to try one of those old Randall Century 200's that dime used on the Cowboys and Vulgar albums.
So there were 2 versions of the Warhead? I didn't know that.

I've heard both god and bad about the Krankenstein. Some say it only sounds good with the Krankenstein cab and a pedal in front to push it some more.
Too bad Dime passed before he really had a chance to fine tune that thing. I think he was finally onto something when he switched to tube heads.

Yes, there were 2 versions. Like I said before, the X2 is widely regarded as being the closer (est?) one to Dime's actual tone. Unfortunately IIRC only about 350 were made, and they probably go for as much as a high end tube head when you can find them.

My buddy has a Krankenstein and has Misfit said it was really thin! Especially as much as he paid for it!! He went on bragging on how it was gonna blow my Rivera away and so on, but like I told him, you gotta shop around and test drive shit! Don't just buy it cuz someone put they're name on it. Much less think your gonna nail someones tone! Remember Dime used a rack from hell, and was probably oblitgated some to sell Kranks name etc...On top of that, everyones tone has been molested quite a bit when they record in a studio! I did like the cabinet tho...

I'm surprised to read about people calling the Krankenstein thin-sounding. A friend of mine bought one for his studio, and I've had numerous opportunities to play through it. Not thin by way of comparison to the Marshall, Peavey, Randall and Rivera heads he had setup alongside it. However, it does NOT sound like Dime so far as his Pantera tone is concerned. It's a rather unforgiving amp, surprisingly "clean" as far as pick attack and such, so it won't hide sloppy playing.

I wouldn't want to use one for my day-to-day amp, but it'd work fine for laying down some solos.

I played with one for waaaay too long. (Krankenstein) Thin is exactly how I would describe it if I had to in one word. I even used the little tone guide they provide...CRAP! It did remind me of the "Randall" SS sound. Not a sound I like...Tried the T2 recently...Yuck! There old SS stuff from the 80's was better...

The Rev was also a let down. I thought I would like it after playing with a band whos guitaist was using one. He sounded awesome....but after playing with the two Kranks I am willing to wager he was using a OD to thicken/boost his sound.

first I thought that ENGL's were the worst sounding hi end amps... boy I was wrong... Krap products are unbelievebly horrible... but I've heard that they actually can make good sounding amps it just that most of their products on the market were very badly made

I respect Dime's tone but I'm not currently try to emulate it at all.
If I were, I would get the Randall Century 200 head bcause that was his main Randall head in the beginning and that's the tone of his that I like.

I was just wondering how all of his "signature" amps compared to each other.

I know he used a Furman PQ3 rack EQ, but I didnt know that he also used a rack setup.
Does anyone have an equipment list of what he used in his rack, and what year he used it?

I haven't played the Krankenstein, but I did try a Krank Revolution at the store once. I think the people upstairs thought there was an earthquake going on. Holy crap, that thing had bass. Bass and tons of gain. Great if you want to do just Nevermore but horrible for anything else.

I did play a used Warhead once. I kind of liked it, and it definitely nailed the Cowboys From Hell tone, but again it's a one-trick pony.

I can get a pretty good Pantera tone from my El Diablo. The active EQ actually makes the EQ knobs useful. If you see one at a store, try it out. You would probably need an overdrive in front for that extra boost in gain though.

I think its a great sound but only for a few minutes. Then it gets aweful but I was never a fan of Dimebags tone. His playing and attitude is another story. Brilliance.
