Best pickup i've had was whatever was in my wolfgang, that is the sound i'm after again. I found a comment on a site that mentioned a tone zone or a duncan distortion as the closet pickups to that evh config. Is that bullshit or not?
i don't know why people say jb is hit or miss. i understand u didn't like the one you had but it really is THE quintessential pickup. i'm not sure what the pickups in the wolfgang sound like but if you want to sound like eddie pick up a custom custom.

I had a Full Shred once in the bridge position of a Rhoads and yanked it out. I thought it was too weak for a bridge pickup, same problem with the Pearly Gates too. My current favorite seems to be the Tone Zone, I agree with Rupe, its pretty big sounding. Nothing wrong with a JB either as this pickup usually does cut through pretty good. There are lots of good pickups, I've used the Screamin Demon, Custom Custom, Distortion for Duncans and PAF Pro, Super Distortion for Dimarzios. I'm still partial to the Tone Zone currently

I would suggest a Duncan SH-15, Alternative 8. I have one in the bridge of my ESP MX-II and it sounds like a monster. I would say the tone is like a higher output Custom Custom.

Sounds wrong, but an X2N matched to a mahogany body just rips!
          You'll cut through alright.
Keep it 3/8" away from the strings, and use your volume control.
          You will likey.

FWIW, the JB was probably not the best pickup for the DK2 in my opinion. I love JB's in mahogany guitars, and they sound great in my all-maple guitars too. Not my favorite in alder though.

that seems to be the main problem, too much choice, and when we're talking £60 a pop it can get expensive if you don't like the sound..
I would have thought someone would have mentioned an Evo by now?!

Quite a few dimarzio's in there, but they are mainly in black in the UK and are more money than SD's.
I've had a Breed before in the KE3, instead of the detonator and it really sounded good.
I fancy white bobbins because the guitar is white with a black pickguard with black pups at present, a white humbucker would contrast nicely.

                I'm still undecided
Just remember you can alter the colour of the bobbins very cheaply and quite effectively with bobbin toppers. I've had some cream ones and they looked fine. Dirt cheap too.

And if you don't want to spend £60, take a look at the Bill Lawrence USA 500XL. I have one in my Concept and it's well worth the money. You can get them from Banjomikez on ebay, he sends to the UK and is a good guy.

I've known this guy personally since the mid 80's...he's a top notch person and I highly recommend him for all your pickup and parts needs.

Yep. I don't know him personally but I've used him for all my pickups and he's very helpful. I have about 5 string winders too since he sometimes puts them in with the pickups!

i've checked out banjomikez and saved him as fav seller, cheers guys.
My friend has offered me a EMG H3 but i would have to modify the scratchplate by making the round corners square. Are they any good?

Well i've made a decision because thinking it over is doing my head in, so now i can sleep at night haha

Totally gone for something else in the end and ordered a white DP159F Evo. which will be here thursday!
I remember a while back borrowing a friends epiphone sg400 that had an evo in and that sounded sweet.

Stay away from that Bill Lawrence USA.
8 strings? Because 6 is too easy?

You may also want to try the Breed DP-165. Dimarzio tech support recommended it to me for a bridge pickup for a mahogany setneck guitar and it really sounds great. It's not quite as hot as the DP-166 and has very clear overtones. Yes it's the Breed neck pickup but they actually recommend using it in the bridge position.
