I bought a crybaby wah ages ago (15 years?) and never used it. I finally got it out recently to do some Slash (Sweet Child).

I can KIND OF see why Hammett uses his wah too much.

Know the feeling man. I remember when I first started using wah pedals. Currently I'm rockin a Dunlop Original Crybaby and a Dunlop Zakk Wylde Wah. Both are pretty sick.
I agree that a lot of really shitty players make themselves sound a lot better by taking advantage of wah pedals. Which in my mind is sort of cheating, but if it sounds good then in it sounds good regardless of how the player is achieving the sound or the skill of the player.

Heck! It takes skill just to step on and turn those darn things on and off! That is why I am an all out proponent of a switchless wah wah, the best thing they ever invented. I had a Vox reissue that sounded really good, and at one show I came out of my lead and into my rhythm riff and it was on when I thought I shut it off. Kinda sucked at the time. Wah definitely has its place, especially in a one guitar band. It just helps to mix it up a little, although you don't want to over do it or use it a crutch to disguise inadequate or sloppy guitar playing. Micheal Schenker uses it the best, just enough to know it's there, by finding a nice sweet tonal notch and letting it shape the notes. I think Kerry King of Slayer might use a Dunlop Q-Factor [?], you can set it so it sounds like a notched wah. I've never checked one of those out though. Remember a wah wah pedal is one of the first effects pedals ever. They have been easily available for over 40+ years, and are an essential part of rock 'n roll guitar history.

I have a mini wah collection going on here. Orig gcb95, ibanez wh10, schaller whawhayoiyoi , aria diamond (a beaut!), crybaby from hell. CFH wins for overall usability, but I still want a vox wah to go with them.
I still stand by my motto 'Whammy is the new wah' though

I've never owned or played a wah before!! Believe it or not?!
I bought one this summer for my buddy and had it at my house for about a week, and never even plugged it in, and I dont know why I didn't!
I'm kind of kickin myself in the ass for not tryin it out.
It was an Original Crybaby that was modded w/ a true bypass, and had different caps and resistors in it....I'm told it fuggin screams too.'Howling in shadows

He finds his heaven
Spewing from the mouth of hell'

Schenker does use it the best. To me he uses it as an extreme tone control. I had one 15 years ago and made attempts to use it like Schenker. I even opened it up and tried adjusting the rack and pinion gears that control the Q-factor to get Schenker's tone. After awhile I just stopped using it. It was getting to be a crutch. I felt naked without it. Might have to take it out tonight.
