How important is biasing?

Am extreme example, but the bias cct in my Marshall currently has a fault, which is taking the bias voltage way out of tolerance, resulting in one of the power valves glowing very red and getting very hot.

Fortunately I noticed this at a practice, if it had been at a long, high volume gig it could have caused all sorts of fireworks...literally
