  • Anybody Here Use an Akai DSP16?

I want to record without using a mic'd amp. Plugging a guitar straight in and using the onboard effects does not produce very good sound.

Input 8 is line level. Now I can plug a guitar into pedals and run it into input 8. Sounds better.

Recently I got a Marshall 6100 that has a speaker emulator. I can press a button and turn off the sound from the Marshall to the speaker connected to it which is cool and plug a cord from the Marshall emulator into the Akai.

So far so good. But I get all kinds of hiss from the Marshall when it is plugged in.

Granted I plugged into already recorded tracks and the effects on those tracks are probably on.
I am thinking I should turn off all the effects in my previously recorded track and see what happens.

Another possibility I thought of was running the Marshall clean with no gain and using the gain on the DSP only.

Anybody have an experience with this?

an old recording trick was to use a special direct box inline from the speaker outs to the cab. Hughes & Kettner 's Redbox and a few other had the ability to handle the speaker load but you did have to have sound coming out your cab.

anyway... they'd take the XLR out of the redbox and run that direct to the board and mix that with the mic'd cab.

i would not reccomend running the gain on the DSP.

everything you are experiencing is what lead to companies like Line 6 and the modeling movement. - get a POD 2.0 and put it on the marshall setting. you'll have much better results.

I will check into the POD

      Hmm.......that gives me an idea.

I should be able to hook reverb and distortion stomp boxes right into the line level input.
I think I will try that first and see what kind of sound I can get. That is basically what a POD is anyway it looks like - a fancy set of stomp boxes of (course with other capabilities).

the POD is a preamp with effects & cab modeling. you can also turn the cab modeling on and off.
