Daniel, $50 is an awesome price, usually you cant touch one for less than $250 on any given week.
THere's so many mods for the MP-1 so I'm sure that you'll be able to tweak it to what you like.

I always liked the MP-2 because it has a little more gain than the MP-1 or MP-1 Classic, but there aren't any mods available aside from a chip for faster patch changes with your midi switch.
I'm good friends with a guy who helped design the 3 Tube Mod for the MP-1, so if you have plans for that let me know and I'll see if he can hook you up.

metalchurch79- yeah my goal is to either do the deluxe or the platinum mod over at voodooamps. your notes on the mp2 is why i didnt look for one(no mods) although it may not need it.

Trem- guess what, i plugged the mp1 up took a step away and what do you know 80% of the hum went away....

        guitar - mp1 - boss ns-50 - stereo eq - maximizer - power

        thanks.
You want the Boss unit at the end of the chain...right before your power amp. Essentially you want the following signal path:

guitar > preamp (ADA) > effects > compressors > eq's > sound processors (maximizers/exciters/etc...these will help restore clarity lost by running through all that other stuff) > noise reduction (NS-50) > power amp

Compression can be a tricky one and can be placed at different spots in the signal chain to taste...you don't have one so no worries there.

thnx trace. i actually talked to via email thru voodooamps. i've been meaning to call, but i'm still waitin on that tax refund so that i can call you, send it, pay you, and play it.

No worries my friend, I was just trying to point out some thing of the common things that cause unwanted hum in the ADA MP-1's in the hopes it will help.

          Have a great day guys!

Trace, ever do anything to a CAE3+se?

Looking to crunch it up a bit, without losing the tone... I currently have to run emg81>emg PA-2 inot the front to get it crunchy/edgy enough, and that has its own set of issues.

            Just curious.

I noticed a big difference in gain when switching from 12ax7 to ecc83 tubes, I haven't tried the ecc81's though.
The ECC83 is the British equivalent of the 12AX7. There might be a slight tone difference, but there really shouldn't be a gain difference.
An ECC81 (or 12AT7) has lower gain, though.

I believe there is a difference in the heater sensitivity between the two. I may be wrong, however there was a clear difference in sound between the 2. Any thoughts?

Actually, I thought I had noticed that too man... I just credited it to different brands of tubes of the same model sound different than others... And that they do.

OK, in my free time this weekend I'm going to break out the 'ol vacuum tube tester and test both tubes. Many photo's(if wanted) and a possible "my bad".

The difference may be attributed to brand difference, but for some nagging reason, I also believe there is a physical difference as well.

Not one to discount examining it closely, as I'll be waiting to hear of course, and love to talk about that stuff.

Just figure that there are physical (construction etc.) differences amongst different brands of 12ax7's.. Some VERY different. So, it would likely to be somewhat different regardless.

Since they are the same pin setup, not real sure what you would find there.

May be different values, but that relates to wear/efficiency...

And so far, no one has ever found a relationship between what a tube tester could display about a tube and the tone it was capable of. Some strong tubes sound like ass, and some almost dead tubes sound nice.

From what I gather, even the old designers of the tubes were somewhat befuddled by guitarists and their questions regarding tone differences in their designs. They were looking for economical manufacturing, durability and longetivity.

Trying to explain tone to them is not far from trying to explain Green to Ray Charles...

CM - you could drive the same path in a pinto or a ferrari, but there may be a different experience!

Specifically I'll be looking at the heater settings, my thoughts are if I'm getting a higher "output" from the cathode = lower heater sensitivity/more gain. Now I'm no tube expert type guy, but that's what I'm thinking ~ kind of like the tonal difference when you're wireless battery is "crapping" out(clipped signal, loss of gain(I've been trying to hunt down a 4th and 5th metal zone, but the bay is sold out.)

On a completely unrelated side note - I now know I'm getting older, coming home from having supper out we had the radio on the oldies station and it made me happy to hear "?" (just as I thought it was going alright, tell me I'm wrong when I thought I was right - it's always the same it's just a shame and that's all(I think it was from Slayers first album)). Plus I may have tried a couple carafes of sake, but it tasted funny so I had to wash it down with beers.

CM(or anyone else) - if you're interested I'll provide full notes on testing the disparities and similarities of the two tubes.
