I'm still exploring it but basically it has a clean and dirty channel. Dirty channel has three 'gears' which are kinda like having three different flavors of distortion. Gears- 1st - Hot Rod Plexi, 2nd - Hot Rod 800, 3rd - Super Hot Rod 800. As if that's not enough the foot switch lets you go between what is called OD1 and OD2 for EACH gear. So on each gear you have OD1 which is your base setting then kick it to OD 2 and its the same sound, just hotter. Then on top of that you get a solo boost switch which is a volume boost that you can set on the amp itself. So set the boost volume, then when your soloing you step on the footswitch for a volume boost.
Also an effects loop with true-bypass and adjustable +4db/-10db switch,Also a full power/half power switch so you can run it at 50 or 100 watts.
So far I love it. No dislikes. It sounds killer. It is LOUD. I run a volume control in the loop to tame it and am able to still get a fat sound. The one thing that is different is that it is a very dry sound since there is no reverb which took some getting used to. Not a big deal i just throw my delays and reverbs in the loop and its great.
I have a Marshall JCM 800 and it does one thing great, but only that one thing. And it always left me wanting a little more gain. The Splawn has that Marshall sound but you can get so many more flavors and has that extra gain without being messy. Check out the Splawn site, Splawn Fans Forum - Home and clips on youtube.

Thanks! thats a great post. I am way interested. I think its time to start a new piggy bank fellas.

        I do!!!!!

Got $400 saved up now. I would sell of some gear, but the stuff I got to sell isnt worth jack squat...... so why sell I guess. All I have is two Digitech 2120's and one foot controller for one of them. they arent worth much. I never use them, but they dont bring much on fleabay so I might as well keep them and use them for boat anchors.

so given that there is no reverb, do you guys think its better to run a delay pedal and a reverb pedal in the loop OR get a rack mount multieffects unit and use in the loop?? which is a better option?

Are there any needs to front load these splawns? I typically always use a BOSS noise supressor and a compressor in front of my Roadking. it makes it sound better at low volumes. and I run EQ pedal and a BBE sonic stomp in the loop as well. the sonic stomp is awesome!

I think there is a 3 or 4 month wait as of now. I bought mine used but from what i gather at the Splawn forum you put half down when you order and pay the balance when its shipped. Might want to put the initial payment down soon and use the 3 or 4 months to save up the rest. Another thing is you get a lifetime warranty from Splawn if your the original purchaser.(I think) Or just pick up a used one if you can find one.
As for the effects, I'm using a Digitech RP7 in the loop.(just because i have it) I turn everything off on it that colors the sound like EQ, compressor, cabinet simulator, all that shit off. Then I set up my delays, reverbs, flanger, phasers so i can turn them on and off individually stomp box style. The guy I bought my Splawn from was using all Boss pedals in the loop except he was running a keely modded Boss distortion for boost and a Tone Press through the front. It sounded great with his setup also. pedals or multi effects, i guess its a matter of preference, both will work fine.
There is no NEED to front load it. But if your playing say on gear 1 with a mild overdrive you may want to have a distortion pedal for a boost if you want to switch to a hot lead sound or go to a crushing distortion without walking over to the amp and flipping it to gear 2 or 3. Gears are not foot switchable on my amp but i think the new ones may be able to do that.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I am certianly interested. Got my piggy bank started up. $400 in there now. I am not in a hurry. all in good time. that way I have time to pick out what color I want, and what style headbox I want. the white with a superstock headbox really stands out to me. the white is frickin classy!!! those graphic ones dont do much for me. the old plexi style just aint me. I like the "V" shaped vent in the front. looks cool and kinda 50's retro at the same time. and I like the idea of airflow getting thru an amp. the more air the better. keep em cool. I will certainly go white chassis panels.

black tolex is so common, I want something different. the red is cool, but there are alot of those red crates running around. orange amps use orange. the purple is well..... I dont know. its cool, but not cool. plus, you see mesa's in purple often. so the white kinda speaks to me.

I dont mean to sound dumb, but I am unfamiliar with a G/System.

The G/System has relays built in so you can run 2 leads from the G/S to the footswitch inputs on the Quickrod and channge all the amp channels..

                    Clean
                    OD1
                    OD2
                    Lead Boost

                    but not the gears!

you can programe the required amp channel into your patches so with 1 switch you can go from say clean with chorus and delay on one patch to OD2 with reverb on another etc!

The G/S is not cheap but its very good,if you wire it up in what they call the 4 cable method you can have all of your delays, chorus, reverbs etc in the loop where they sound the best and any stomp box pedals(because the G/S has 4 loops of its own) in front of the anp where they sound the best!

It really is worth the money..

                    cheers Boz.

I'm going to have to try both the Nitro and Quick rod. What I'm waiting for is for used 2009's to start hitting ebay. Starting in 2009 they are adding a built in volume pot in the loop. As per their website,

"No more having to use a volume pedal or other device to get a great tone at low volumes. Scott said he did quite a bit of experimenting w/ pot values and the like to come up w/ what worked the best w/ Splawn."

I am personally low volume player but want a powerhouse amp anyway. Big tube amps with built in attenuators that don't significantly suck tone appeal to me greatly.

If you use effects with a mix feature than you would be able to control the volume with that anyway which would make the 2009 added feature useless... FYI.

                            Very nice amps guys..congrats.

If I didn't have my Uber, I'd seriously go after one of these bastids..prolly the Nitro for my simple needs.

Hey Boz..nice playing and tone, and welcome.

Although that Nitro that Nateb posted is prolly best suited for my wankery. Kinda sounds like what I dial up @ home.

Although I think the Quick Rod is a very unfortunate for an amp, that sounds awesome!
