  • Amp Recommendations please !

our other guitarist needs an amp, he had a TSL122 but had a load of trouble with it, and the experience has put him off Marshall, which means I'm short of experience and can't really help him.
a 2x12 combo with the facility to hook up to an extra cabinet would suit him best
He needs at least 2 channels, clean and dirty, and prefers an older valve sound, something that would get him sounding like Tom Morello and Hendrix would keep him happy ( I know he needs a Marshall for that, but hey ... )
50W is enough power, and he's got a budget of about £500 to £600 ( up to $900 ), new or used would be ok
I've already suggested a Peavey XXX 212, and the ValveKing 212 .. but he's being seduced by the bells and whistles on the Vox Valvetronix, which frankly frightens me, it looks too much like a valvestate for me
so guys, what does he need?

Those Vox amps are great practice amps.. But you wont be getting any Hendrix tones out of that.. Same with the Peavey ValveKing... For $900 he has quite a ride array of options, those blues deluxe amps are great and can sound mean as shit with a tube screamer..

You could get a fairly close hendrixy tone with the valveking witha fender it would be more like SRV, as hendrix predominantly if always used marshall's..

Saying that the peavy XXX or 3120 which is it's replacement should be a fairly veratile amp as it has EL34's 3 channels etc so that would cover more stuff modern tones classic tones and cleans..

The valveking has ok bluesy tones but it's better for cleans and heavy overdrive..Saying that i'm not a blues gutiarist and havent really messed around with the lightly overdriven tones all that much...

thanks for the info guys, it's helpful

If Marshall weren't off the menu, what suggestions would you make then?

        I'd be pushing a JCM800 2x12 split channel combo ...

I played a Peavey 3120 last night and it kicked my ass.

I'm going back to GC to do battle with it again and do a full review.

The problem with the TSL122 combo is that it's a bad ideas to have hot tubes hanging under a PCB board. They heat up the circuit and cause it to whack out.

The JCM800 days had the tubes in sockets separate from the PCB so they don't heat up the board that much.

B-52 AT series. Not too expensive, has some nice features, and sounds pretty good too.

I'm gonna suggest the Bugera 333XL. Bang for the buck, plenty of good tones. EL34 brutality! And much more reliable than many of the bashers say.
Transitioning from Retired Musician from cover bands to a Full time vocalist/frontman/guitarist in an original and covers band....it's been a while and this should get NASTY!

                              Yeah, ain't that a bitch.

Don't get me wrong ..I loves my Uberschall man. But the 3120 definitely got my attention last night. So I must investigate this further.

I like it better than the 5150 and JSX..and I know all about those.

Peavey is really gettin' their shit together and being competitive with boutique muthafuggahs it seems...and it's fuggin' affordable.
