I have a JVM full stack which sounds great for classic thrash and metal. The only thing Ive heard that I would consider changing to is a Bogner Uber or going totally power amp/fx.

At the momemnt I put a GT10 through the JVMs power amp. Very nice match once you start patching in some killer tones.

I had a Triple rec and a Roadking for a while. Great amps but too smooth for my tastes. I like more bite and crunch. They got close but no cigar.

Never heard a Splawn, Interested to try one.
All men play on 10. Never gonna turn down again.

Live, my guitarists use a 5150III and an Engl Poweball... when we record we use both of those amps and an original Bogner Uberschall and a Deizel Herbert for leads...

      love em all!!!

two channel dual rec would be my suggestion. but then again with up to 1200 you got alot of options. do you like marshall metal or mesa metal? could make a big difference.

My personal favorite metal amp is the Marshall JCM900 sl-x... With the right power tubes and preamp tubes, can walk all over other amps with ease!

                Cheers,
                Charlie

I guess if I had to choose an amp that can do metal really good and is affordable to most musicians I would choose either a stock 5150 or a Dual Rectifier.
For cabinets I would choose either a stock Marshall 1960A or B with an X pattern V30's and T75's.

For thrash - Mesa Mark III or a IIC+ if you are fortunate enough to own one.
For Modern Metal - Engl SE head, Diezel Herbert or Bogner Uberschall
                    Good deals with:
                    Metal Medal II, Tonyl11

I hate the Recs... they're too fucking muddy and fuzzy. I like my thrash metal (which I play) with a crisp but yet crunchy tone. From what I have played Randall are good. But if you dial her in just right the Mark Series Boogie's are hard to beat.

This is gospel from the books of Rudy and William.

For Peavey the new 3120 is the pick of the litter. I strongly urge old Peavey fans to investigate.
