  • Engl E530 users.......

Ive been using a rocktron voodu valve and I must admit, it doesnt sound that bad. the effects are great, the gate is great, and the tone is ok. Im running it through a Carvin T100. It's a compact setup that is doing the job. However, i need more grind. Ive always had my eye on the e530, but have never played through it. Im considering getting an e530 and G major to replace the voodu valve. I'm no stranger to the G major, but I want to know if the e530 lives up to the Engl name. I'm interested in tight gain amd a good clean channel. So, if you have one/use one, chime in and let me know what you think. I want to hear the good and the bad.

nobody? maybe more info would help. I'm using a carvin T100 power amp and an old Mesa cab with 2 black shadow c90's up top (open back) and 2 v30s blow (sealed back). I'm in a hard rock/metal cover band and want one good crunchy tone and sparkling clean. The VDV has excellent clean capabliities and "ok" metal tones. it's probably better suited for rock/hard rock. its a great alternative for the line 6 stuff, but I just want good crunchy tube based tone. the vdv has a 12ax7 but I dont know. its just not grabbing me. I will eventually swap out the carvin T100 for a Mesa 20/20.

I have an 530 which I use in combination with a Boss GT Pro and an 830/50 poweramp and their standard 4*12 cab. Before buying the rack gear, I used an Engl Sovereign 100W 2 with to 12" speakers. I really like the 530. The clean, the crunch and the high gain channels are all good and I'm happy with it all. The sound of the rack gear is quite similar to that of the Sovereign.

Cool. How noisy is it? I know I can use the gate in the Gmajor, but I'm spoiled by my current setup.

My Sovereign was really noisy for some reason and I had to use the noise gate in the GT Pro, but the 530/830 is not. I don't even use the noise gate anymore.

I couldn't live without the gate on my G Major. The Uber with the gain cranked high is one noisy mutha!!

Hey horns, I wasn't expecting any posts from any US guys at that time of day. Either you are up really early or go to bed really late...

Cool deal. Thanks for the info. Bill, does Bogner make an Uber type preamp?

I was recently thinking about going with a rack setup, and someone recommended the 530 to me. I checked it out, and the clips I found sound pretty damn good. I'm seriously thinking about grabbing one, if I can find a used one for a good price.

Not that I'm aware of. My other amp is the Marshall rack w/JMP-1..but that's a completely different tone all together.

Ive been that route. The JMP 1 had more of a brown sound to it. I my carvin T100 with the JMP 1 and a G major. Great rig, but I want more grind for this band. Jesus I'm such a gear whore. I dont have anything I used to have. I bet I'm edging up on John (jgcable) for the most gear changes in the last 5 years.

Zeegs, it seems like $500 is the going price used on ebay for the E530. $599 new. For the money, I was even considering an Engl Fireball. I could replace my whole rack with one head and a smal 2 space rack for a G major and a power supply. Hmmmmmm.....

That seems to be the current price from what I've seen too. I was told to look for a used one around $400, so I'm just going to hold out, and maybe the prices will go down.

Hey, just thought I'd give you a heads-up. There is currently a scratch and dent 530 on Musicians Friend right now for $449.

Well Engl will have a Jeff Loomis sig model soon. Since he does have the very tone I've been after since I heard NM. I bought all my Marshall heads, JMP-1, and even the 5150s on that exact same premise of chasing Eddie's tone. Once I caught it..I wanted Jeff's. So I cultivated both ..with both of my rigs I suppose. One does VH..one does NM. They sound awesome together.

You should have kept the Stiletto!!!

I've heard good things about ENGL but the two models that I've played (Powerball, Fireball) were cold and sterile sounding. One of the best recorded "Marshall" sounds that I've heard in recent years is Primal Fear...I hear that they used the ENGL Savage for those tones. I never tried one of their preamps, but a few guys over at Rig Talk are pretty high on them.
