I've heard good things about ENGL but the two models that I've played (Powerball, Fireball) were cold and sterile sounding. One of the best recorded "Marshall" sounds that I've heard in recent years is Primal Fear...I hear that they used the ENGL Savage for those tones. I never tried one of their preamps, but a few guys over at Rig Talk are pretty high on them.

I played around with a Stiletto in the studio, and I wasn't really impressed. I ended up sticking with my B-52 believe it or not. The Stiletto seemed a little harsh. Admittedly, I would like to have spent a little more time with it, and would have probably found some better sounds in it.
    Sleep!!, That's where I'm a viking!!

      The Engl Savage rocks.
You will get a super tight gain and a great clean channel with a Carvin V3. You will also get another channel to mess with and 2 smart loops. Its a great amp. Its a Marshall and a Mesa and a Quad X and a Legacy all rolled into one.

I would agree with you on the Powerball sounding somewhat sterile, but an EQ and a tube swap does wonders to open up that amp. I was on the verge of selling, but after an MXR 10-band and a tube swap, it sounds awesome.
