Sounds like I more than likely won't go wrong with any of these. Thanks for the info fellas!
do you play out? if you do, don't sweat the low-end thing from your cabs. if you play at home only, that's a different story....

I think I've settled on looking at the Mesa 2:90. The only question I have about it is the use of the 3 voicings. The manual says you can use a tip-to-ground switcher, something with which I'm unfamiliar. Who makes them? How much do they cost? What exactly do they do?

Those are just your standard switch like you would use for channel changes on an amp...they would plug into the three 1/4" input jacks on the back (or any one of them...I typically only use the 1/2 power function).

Where are you at in central PA? I gig in State College...I could show you how I have mine set up if you would like.

          This is a JMP-1 into a Peavey 120/120 (6L6)...live in a basement studio. Recorded in 1996..

My ol' bud in my old VH trib band played a JMP-1 into a Peavey 120/120 and that sounded fantasic too. He downsized his poweramp because he was sick of hauling a heavy rack..man that really sucked ass!!

If you play 80's rock/metal..you want my Marshall rig! Marshall 9200w/6L6/JMP-1/JFX-1/BBE 422 into four Marshall 1960B cab w/ 75 wt celestions. I rely on preamp distortion and want the most headroom, and full-bodied sound possible from the poweramp.

My other amp is a Bogner Uberschall..actually both rigs sound amazing together.
+1 on this, i also have the 9200 w/ 5881s. great amp. unfortunately, weighs enough to give you a hernia.
Its a complete catastrophe. But Im a professional, I can rise above it. LOL

I had almost the exact same setup with a Marshall EL34 50/50 and I loved it's sound. I could dial in almost any tone I wanted with that setup. I can't speak to the Marshall 9200 cause I've never played one, but I think the MP-1 pairs better with EL34's than 6L6's IMO.

What's the difference between the Marshall 9100, 9200 and the EL34 50/50 and 100? Is it just the tubes or are there other differences?

Nah..Marshalls have PLENTY of mids, and not known for much bottom end. The 6L6 still have all the mids you need, but a much tighter, focused, and defined bottom end which make that amp more balanced and full-bodied. I had four friends buy the EL34 version and everyone agreed without question when paired with the JMP-1. It can be converted to 5881 (6L6).

9200 = 2 X 100wts My fave because JMP-1 has enough gain w/ silicone diode, and has the right amount of headroom..so that you're tone doesn't change dramatically from bedroom and very LOUD levels. I run this with both presence off, gains full on and in Modern voice mode.

9100 = 2 X 50 ..sounds identical to 9200 at bedroom to moderate levels, tone changes due to pushing the poweramp section. Not as full-bodied and has a low and high end roll off that goes into compressed midrange territory. Something that was desired in the days of non master volume Marshalls.

EL 34 100/100 and 50/50..self explanitory and as I described above. EL34 fair better in other amps such as Bogner, Mesa..but not Marshall IMO! Too much "honk". The Peavey 120/120 or even 60/60 was definitely cooler and cheaper than these with JMP-1. Like I said, EL34 can be converted to 6L6 without much hassle ..so I'm told. KT 88s may even be better. I'd be interested in that.

I bought this rig new in 1996. Played many since. Mine is bone stock and the best sounding when paired with 5881s and JFX-1. Something about the JFX-1 with this rig sounds best even when compared to G major, Intellifex or my old Lexicons. Very basic time effects..delays, choruse, reverb, also insist of the stock Sovteks. I tried Tung Sols and JJ 12AX7s. Tung Sols and Sovtek didn't make a huge difference..the JJ's completely sucked the balls.

BTW: I swear by running a BBE 422 in the loop. This of course goes stereo into four Marshall 1960B cabs.

That's it, To me running this set up anyway else is a compromise, and I would NOT have the sound I have. Therefore would prolly buy something else all together.
