  • Amp owners - need help

I've only ever bought one brand new amp - a Peavey Bandit 112 year ago - but I seem to recall most preamps/amps back then came with a diagram detailing the EQ curve (falloff chart) and operational frequency ranges (i.e. Bass Mid and Treble centered at xx frequency) either on a separate tech spec sheet or in the manual.

Do recent amps still come with those?

Some may, or the specs might be available on the company web sites, but from what I have seen, most manuals now don't have much in the way of tech specs beyond the basic wattage, power consumption, etc.

I have acquired several amps recently (3 heads, to be exact)... and no, none of them come with anything like that, I checked the manuals just now.

I checked the Mesa website but all they had was the manuals, and they didn't have it either.

Dangit. I need falloff charts so I can set up "modeled" EQ patches.

perhaps ask the same question on those amp DIY forums?

I measured the frequency response of a 50W jubilee head years ago using a spectrum analyzer my dad borrowed from work, and there was nothing special to see there...no particular peaks or valleys at any particular frequencies...just a pretty flat curve starting around 100Hz up to around 20KHz. Which is pretty much exactly what an audio amp should do.

I've never seen those plots come with an amp.

Hmmm. Then I need to find another way to diagram the EQ frequencies of various amps. I know various amps have their own tone, and it's related to EQ frequency centers and such, as well as speaker/cabinet matchups, gain structure (preamp, rectifier, etc).

Guess I'll hafta do it the old fashioned way - finding audio clips and trying to do it by ear.

              Bleh.

God forbid you use your ears to dial in a tone...what sense does that make? :ROTF:

I can understand wantin to see that info myself as I'm a tech geek. On the same token your ears are really all that matter right? Is a blind player capable of getting good tone from his gear?

EQ varies from amp to amp, I dont even really look where the knobs end up, just whether it pleases the ears.
