  • ENGL Blackmore user switching to E530?

If you seen this on other forums that is because I am canvasing every internet amplifier forum on this topic. Here is my situation. I am going to college this fall (to study music) and need an amplification solution. I currently own an engl blackmore which I absolutely love. The only problem is that it is completely unsuitable for dorm living. After lamenting for a while and seriously considering not going to college I decided that I would just have to find a quieter headphone enabled solution to practicing in my dorm room that was also robust enough for jamming. live playing. Thus I hit upon the engl e530, of which i have the following queries 1. Can it be played guitar->preamp->headphones without a poweramp? I've heard it can but I just want to double check. How does this sound? How does it sound through a cab using the built in poweramp? 2. Can it do these tones I desire to emulate? 1. Tony Iommi, Dehumanizer/New Heaven and Hell era stuff (especially the leads in bible black) 2. Adrian Smith, Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son Era 3. Ritchie Blackmore Perfect Strangers/The Battle Rages on kind of sound (later stuff mainly) 4. Glenn Tipton Everything Post Stained Class (Hes an ENGL endorser now, right?) 5. James Hetfield (RTL-AJFA) 6. Kai Hansen (Helloween/Gamma Ray didn't he use the E530 on keeper 1-2?) 7. Criss Oliva (Hall of the mountain king era and Edge of thorns soloing type sounds) Although most of these are more "vintage" tones I also hope that it has enough gain on tap and a tight enough low end to do more modern metal like Karl Sanders/Nile stuff 3. What ENGL amp is it the closest to in terms of tone? 4. What is a good reputable online ENGL dealer? Are there any that would be willing to cut a deal if I got the preamp/cab/rack case all together? 5. What inexpensive poweramps sound good in conjunction with the e530? 6. How do the recording outputs sound? My plan is to use the e530 for practicing in my dorm room with headphones. I will also have a 2x12 (either vader or engl still undecided) and a poweramp if the situation calls for it. Yet I also want to be able to haul the e530 and my guitar (in one trip) to my universities recording facilities (which are open to all music students) to record with. I think all in all this plan for a "college rig" is a better idea than a small combo or a boss/line 6 multifx or a computer infterface. But if anyone here thinks something else would work better please tell me, as I want a rig that will last me through four years of college and want to get it right on the first shot! Thanks!

dude, most of the tones you are describing are marshall tones. kai hansen using engl e530 on keeper 1 & 2? nope. marshall. blackmore on "strangers in the night"? marshall. criss oliva, "mountain king" and "edge of thorns"? marshall or laney. adrian smith on "seventh son"? marshall or GK.

i would think the e530 could get in that range, but why not just look for a jmp-1? that's what tipton was using before going to engl. it's what smith is using. and while hansen has been known to use engl, a lot of the time he uses a POD pro.

    just some food for thought....
    GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

    and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

I'm fully aware that most of these guitarists use marshall the majority of the time in the eras I was asking about. The thing here is that for my own music I vastly prefer the sound of engl to marshall. If I was in a cover band I think the JMP-1 would definately be a better fit for me. In the end what I want for "my sound" outweighs replicating others sounds, I just wanted to know if it could get reasonably close.

      Thanks for the input.

I had no idea kai hansen was using pods now. I researched some more and he did use marshalls on keeper 1 but definately switched to the e530/engl poweramp for part 2. I think he started using them again on the land of the free part II (the engl website seems to confirm this).

Don't believe all that you read in regards to what your favorite players are using live and in the studio. They usually only mention the gear they have endorsements through. For dorm rehearsing and occassional recording and jamming at college I suggest a POD XT3 Live or a Boss GT-10 and a good set of headphones.

the 530 can indeed be used with headphones, i.e., with no power amp. My girlfriend and son have gone to bed (it's almost midnight here), so I can't test how it sounds connected directly to the cab right now. I'm not sure which head it sounds the most like since I've only owned the 530 and a Sovereign, but those are fairly similar in sound. As for whether it's the right solution to you, I'm not sure...

This seems to be the most frequent advice I get. I (perhaps unwisely) pulled the trigger on the e530. If this doesn't work out I will strong consider a modeling soluition. Worst comes to worst I can always send it back within 35 days.

HUH?!?!?! is this video game shit? what does THAT have to do with an engl preamp?

I never heard a better version of the Criss Oliva Tone than my Marshall rig.

It's Criss Oliva in a box and that exactly why I bought it in '96.

Marshall 9200 (5881) JMP-1 and JFX-1 into FOUR 1960B Marshall cabs w/ 75 wt celestions. ..I also have a BBE 422 in the loop. Oddly, the JFX-1 adds alot of that color and vibe to the rig. What's cool is that it is very quiet at LOUD volume levels and don't require a noise gate.

Nothing to date even comes close. Especially his EOT tone. It does a better version of HOTMK stuff ..that's sounds too thin and Rockman-ish.

My other amp is an Uberschall, I love both rigs equally for their own reasons. and sound awesome togther!
