Thinking about running my MP-1 into the Return but then I already run it into a TSR12, and dug out an old 21 Pro to do it with as well.

I got rack gear galore around this place

While they all sound different, I can't say any of them sound bad.

I've had my digitech gsp1101 for a couple of weeks now and came to the same conclusion. I'm currently using a pod xt into a atomic 112/18 amp and it sounds a lot better than the digitech preamp. I really wanted to like this unit but it just sounds lifeless to me.

damon1 - I didn't like the GSP1101 much for the first month I had it. But after getting the beta software and doing some tweaking I'm very happy with it. It still may not end up being what you want, but I wouldn't give up on it so quickly.

Given their artist roster who actually use the 1101, I'd say the detractors either need new ears or to spend more time with it.

I already had the beta software downloaded to it and it did sound better but not much. I've tweaked this unit until I'm blue in the face and still not happy with it. Tried all the different configurations on the setup wizard and downloaded patches from digitechs site but I still don't like it. It could be my amp just doesn't gel with this unit. As far as saying it has to be a great unit because of professional artists using it, you need to realize they are getting paid to endorse it. I would be willing to bet that if Marshall, Rocktron, etc. offered them more money, they would be using their gear. I have owned other preamps(rocktron chameleon, ada mp1, valvefx) so I am familiar with dialing in sounds but this unit sounds too digital for me. I'm not saying the unit is bad, it's just not what I'm looking for.

The clips on Youtube are very good. Especially the ones from the guy with the blue dual humbucker strat.

Most of the clips I hear do sound very good, which is why i got the gsp. It's killing me that i can't get a decent sound out of mine. I'm torn between selling it or keeping it and trying it with a dedicated poweramp and cabinet because it sounds horrible through my atomic reactor amp. I also saw the youtube clips with the guy playing the blue strat, but he said he got rid of his gsp and now uses a engl 530.

Going FRFR, the 1101 sounds huge.

I've never been able to gel with the FRFR type of setup, but the tone of 1101 through a powered QSC speaker was very good.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is FRFR?

Full Range/Full Response. Basically, its like PA speakers. You can get them powered or regular.

Most of the time I plug directly into the PA and monitor through a standard wedge monitor and am happy with that.

I think using an amp works well with the GSP1101, but you get a little difference in sound as an amp will always color the sound in some way or another for better or for worse. So the FRFR method just seems to give more consistent results.

The other nice thing about using a wedge monitor is that the sound actually hits me in the ears instead of my amp which hits me in the knees/back (just a combo amp).

I haven't hooked my 1101 up to an amp/cab yet. I'm happy with the sounds I'm getting through my crappy PC speakers and the Behringer monitors as well.

Might amp it this weekend and see what I get.

What configuration are you using on the setup wizard going to your computer?

I'm not using the setup wizard.
Under the I/O Setup menu, I've got the 1/4 Line Output Setup Target Input as Mixer.

That goes into a Rolls RM203x line mixer, which then feeds into a Line Input to my PC.
