  • Mesa dual rectifier EL34 or 6l6

Hi there i need to change the tubes in my mesa dual rectifier and i would like to know wich tube is the best. The amp still has it's original 6l6 but they are tired and need to be replace. If someone can tell me more about the difference between these tubes and btw do i have to bring the amp to a tech to reconfigure the bias?? thanks

    Doesnt it suggest el 34s

Use Mesa/Boogie tubes and no need to bias the amp. It's non-adjustable without modifying the amp anyway.

There should be a bias switch on the rear of the amp which selects the tubes in use as 6L6 or EL34.

I prefer 6L6's, but you know how that goes, why even ask? There is no best, except what is "best" to your ears.

el34s will break up a bit earlier and give you a bit of an upper mid "hump" in your tone.
          When I had my rectoverb I tried 6L6's, Kt-77's and El-34's.
Fro Versatility the KT-77's sounded best.
here's a clip I did using that set up

but for all out Recto "Balls" I found that the 6L6's sounded best.
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

6L6's in a two channel Duel Recto.
EL34's in a two channel Triple Recto.

I have EL-34's in my Single Rec. Compared to my old Rect-o-Verb, it's not as "spongy", and the sound is a bit less refined. To my ears anyway. I still like it though.

                VERY cool clip, kmanick!

EL34s will give it a more midsy tone. 6L6s will give it a more bassy tone.
