I keep an MP-1 around to use with headphones. I occasionally take it to work and Thrash a little between runs. According to this info it's the 1:38 Version since it has the Line/Instrument Switch on the top. Note that it's a PITA to switch or even tell what setting it's on if mounted inside a rack!
Again, old pic's. Half of this gear has been sold but I do still use it with the MidiVerb 2 and the DTR-1 Tuner. Never did get the Marshall SS Pre amp back together.
I don't believe that the 2.01 version changed anything tonally. My unit is a very early one (1.37) but I updated it back in '91 to the 2.01 chip. The only difference that I recall is that it added a lot more factory presets. Any other changes (if there were any) were very subtle.
I think the higher gain tones of the MP-2 are much more sterile than the MP-1...they don't sound as much like a real amp from my experience.
The MP1 3TM is the one you want to get if you get the opportunity. I owned a bunch of stock MP-1's back in the day and currently own a 3TM. It really is night and day difference. I've owned just about every boutique preamp available and would put the 3TM up against any of them.
