  • Journey with Heart - Not Recommended!

Ugh. Saw this tour last night. Let me get this out front - my wife bought us tickets as my "birthday present". Truth be told, she really wanted to see Heart, and dragged me along. Now, I've always dug Neal Schon's guitar playing, so it wasn't much of a stretch for me. But, holy smokes, was this a bad show. And a really weird crowd mix.

The Wilson sisters definitely still have it. Their pipes are strong. As strong as a house. (Which is about the same size as Ann Wilson. ) Their guitar player blew chunks, though. The guy had reasonable chops, but was constantly playing out of time. He just couldn't find the groove. It was almost as painful as the ear infection I have, while enduring 20th row center seats at a loud, bad concert.

The lesbian quotient in the crowd was very high. Nothing wrong with lesbians, but these were mixed in with the typical "rocker" quotient for a standard show plus an unusually high proportion of seniors. I mean real seniors. A hell of a lot of 60+ couples at this show. I don't know how to explain, other than perhaps Journey gaining a new fan base by limiting their recent release to WalMart-exclusive sales. Like I said, a weird crowd mix.

Anyway, on to Journey. They were tight as a band, and had helluva chops all around. And the new singer dude (Philipino, IIRC?) has talent and sounds just like Steve Perry. It's spooky. Unfortunately, he also looks like a shorter, skinnier version of William Hung. :ROTF:

The first third of the show was reasonably good. But Schon was having equipment problems throughout. He kept motioning to and (between songs) discussing with the techs on the sideline. He was clearly pissed at them for repeatedly failing to fix the issue, and it was definitely affecting his playing mojo. I wouldn't doubt that someone got fired after last night's show. At the very least, they got a major ass-chewing. I think at one point he may have even broke a string, and went completely out of tune before a guitar swap.

Anyway, Journey's set then led into a few of their sappier songs, and then some of the new release's material. They did about 4 or 5 songs worth, IIRC. Basically all in a row. And they completely lost the crowd at this point. As in considerable numbers of people sitting down, and many even leaving. Bad move, poor set planning. Too much sap and unknowns, back-to-back.

At this point, my ear infection had had enough pain, and we bailed. I was really disappointed. Having seen Journey a few times before, they've usually been good shows and Schon has always kicked ass. Not last night.

On a side note: it was cool to see Neal's guitars, too. I suspect he is endorsement-shopping right now. His Floyd'd Les Pauls w/sustainers were all present. And, IIRC, he's talked about being unhappy with how Gibby has treated him. But he also played a very cool strathead Fender Tele, possibly set-neck, with the same exact specs. Flame-top, binding and all. It looked badass. And he also brought out a Floyd'd custom PRS with the same set-up, too. Hope he lands with Fender, as that guitar was my favorite. :P

Most Journey shows I've seen consisted of Neil constantly looking sidestage and looking disgusted. I think it has a lot to do with turning into a crotchety old man. His rig always sounded god-like, so I think he might just be a guy who loves to bitch.

Nah, man. It was either his wireless or his monitors going bad. They were working on him between songs, and it just wasn't fixing it. His tone was awesome, though.

Saw Heart about 3 months ago...and they were great! Havent seen
Journey for 6 years, but the last time Schon was on fire! Having equip
issues doesnt mean he has lost it! :-)

Agreed. Schon has always kicked ass. I caught them on a bad night, though, and with a poor set list for the band.

I saw heart a few years ago and they were great. I agree about the guitar player though. youd think they could land someone a little better. Maybe with more experience? I miss Howard Leese in there. I also saw Journey last week on TV. It was from the Download festival. They only showed Stone in Love and Dont Stop. They sounded great, but I couldn't imagine sitting through new stuff mixed with the more pop stuff for an extended amount of time. Schon's tone was spot on. What is he using?

Not sure. All you could see behind him was a line of Marshall cabs. No heads or rack gear to be seen. Must've been off stage, out of sight.

Saw Journey in 06 with jeff scott soto singing. Now I like jeff with yngwie, but the one song the drummer sang sounded better and closer to perry then jeff. I was never a big schon fan and was not impressed. the wife and I couln't wait until they were off stage.

Deen Castronovo - he is an AWESOME singer. He could be a better frontman than MANY frontmen...

I dunno, even in the old "live" video for Wheel In The Sky he had a look on his face like he smelled feet.

I wonder why Howard Leese is not playing with Heart. He's been their guitarist since practically the beginning.

Heart is not Heart without Howard Leese.

Actually, Roger Fisher was the guy who played lead guitar on the first 4 albums that really established their name. Howard Leese was originally the keyboardist/rhythm guitarist, but got promoted to lead when the Fisher brothers split with Ann and Nancy and left the band.

Howard Leese was no great guitarist himself, he was okay but just okay IMO.

Howard hasn't been in Heart for about 15 years, actually. Heart basically went on hiatus for awhile after the Desire Walks On album in the early '90s, and he went on to work with Paul Rodgers. I'm not sure what he's doing now. I get the impression that the Wilson sisters prefer to work with younger musicians now--they probably work cheaper than older guys like Howard.

Oh, and Howard did his share of lead playing even when Roger Fisher was in the band. Howard was always a more 'polished' player, while Roger brought more aggressiveness. They were a good team. Lesson: do NOT sleep with the female band members.

                              Cool review.

Regarding the 60+ folks in the crowd - someone who is 60 in 2009 would have been 27 when Heart released their first album in 1976; if they want to relive their first Heart concert 33 years later more power to them .

I think someone else spotted Schon's Tele-style guitar as an Anderson (their neck join looks kind of like a set-neck from a distance); he's had Andersons off-and-on for the past 10-15 years or so.
