A friend of mine who is a pretty big drinker by U.S. standards lives in Russia part-time & co-owns a bar in St. Petersburg. He tells me that models & ballerinas come in and drink him under the table. Booze is like their 5th food group.

btw why is everyone assuming that amp is even his? He's got the US version of his signature model, it's possibly he showed up and they had the gear there. he may not have dialed in it. there's a lot of things that could have gone on behind the scenes you never know. "Hey show up and when you get here we'll have a rig and one of your signature guitars all wired up and ready to go."

I think he sounds like that very often live, I've never liked that dude because he's a douche and he never did anything for me playing wise either. Don't like his band, songwriting, guitar sound, tone, style of playing etc. On the albums he is on, but I've seen videos of him demonstrating licks or playing live and sometimes he can pull of his fast shit but when it came to more simple pentatonic licks he sounded horrible, vibrato and bends are hit or miss, not much dynamics, the phrasing sounds stiff and he doesn't have much tone in his hands, sounds very sterile to my ears.
But of course 16 year old fanboys think he's the shit.

sometimes i think im the only one who "doesnt get" his playing? I think back to the michael amott interview where he said "im not really that good, the bar has just been lowered so far, people think i am"... Alexi is a good guitar player, i guess, just not the second coming of gilbert, vai, malmsteen, vinnie moore, macalpine, greg howe, etc.... That, for some reason, some people think he is.

Then again, hes in a world famous band and im typing at my keyboard.

He's a good player, but I think produced a lot better music in Sinergy than he does in COB. The growly vocal and cheesy keyboards pretty much ruin COB for me. He and Roope had some killer guitar parts in Sinergy, though.

Alexi is drunk most of the time when they play live gigs. I saw them at Unholy alliance 2 in helsinki and COB was only band that had beer on the stage...

It might have been after his accident where he nearly lost the ability to play at all, but as far as i know he recovered pretty well. of course a hangover is reasonable as well

as for the tone: although i´m a huge COB fan (except for blooddrunk!!!) i never really cared for it, but I do know that he is an excellent player, both studio and live! i don´t know if you guys have seen their live DVD, but they recorded the entire concert without one single break, and everything is just awesome! soundwise and playingwise.
Take a listen, but please don´t judge if you have seen it on youtube only^^

I've seen COB twice (once in 06 and once in 08) and they were excellent both times. I only own Follow the Reaper so I'm not really a fanboy, but gotta give respect where its due.

That's all good, I can't really make a fair judgment because I've never seen them live, but, compare the studio to the live versions.
