  • A surprisingly melodic / interesting song from...

    ... Rusty Cooley

I greatly admire his physical playing ability and technique, but usually his songwriting bores me to tears. But this song by him is actually very interesting (IMO):

I'm usually not that much into Rusty either but this is pretty schweet.

I liked it. Sounds really Batio-esque (I'm not too familiar with Cooley's work, does he usually sound like MAB?)

I don't usually like to bag on Cooley. He's a monster talent and his technique is flawless, but his progressions and stuff sound very "Oh. This is the chord. Oh. This chord works with this so I'll use it". I heard him throw in the hirojoshi "scale" a few times, and it was very obvious. I may sound like I'm rambling, but it just sounds like he's doing stuff because "theoretically" it's correct. Even his rhythms sound like he's sitting down and just attempting to try to make them different for the sake of being different.

He did a cover of Shawn Lane's Epilogue, and I liked his spin on it. Close to the original, but a little different.

I think Cooley's band project "Outworld" was really good.
His playing is amazing, but what puts it over the top for me is the songs and vocalist.

Ah, yes, I forgot about that one. I was really into Rusty for a while before I realized that speed isn't everything. There's a real cool part at about 4:30ish that always reminds me of the intro to Hanger 18 for some reason.

The opening riff is killer in that one Ben, but the main riff is kinda dull. I was so excited during the opening and then it went kinda nowhere for me.

The solo was kind of cool at the start. It was very Yngwie with extra speed but then went into video game territory. I think he would be well served to not try to be so over the top all the time.

Still, I might have to see if I can track down the album to check it out.
