  • George Lynch

I jsut saw this video of Dokken from Philly in 87, which I was at by the way

Georges tone blows me away! He has a wall of white MArshalls behind him, but he has a rack of black ones off to the side. God only knows what he was using, the man has used every piece of gear known to mankind!

Yes indeed, and George is one of those guys who always sound like himself, regardless of what he's playing through. He's also said that the feel and sound inspires him, so it's likely he feels something through all these amps that keeps him going, even if it's just a tiny bit of difference.

Thanks for that! George is why I started playing guitar. His tone has always been amazing and his style is a great mix of technical and soulful.

He's been in a constant search of the "perfect" tone all these years, trying out every piece of gear known to man. But like you said, he always seems to sound like George no matter if it's a Marshall, a Soldano, a Bogner, a Randall, etc. For recordings though, he always seemed to go back to that historical purple plexi...the one everyone in the 80's would have killed to own.

Just goes to show that tone is as much in the hands as it is in the gear!

George is the ultimate gear whore, always in search of that elusive tone.

George is without a doubt my biggest musical influence. a truly unique playing style. his stuff in the 80's was pure genious. sadly, his stuff in the last 15 years was pure garbage.

George was so good back then, I met him outside the arena where the buses were after an Aerosmith/Dokken show back then while they were at their peak. Signed my shirt, talked with everyone for awhile, etc.

Loved his song compositions and tone.

I saw a more current video of George playing Mr. scary live and I don't know what he was doing , but it jsut didnt sound anything like the original, It somehow sounded less technical if that makes any sense.

I also noticed that he has changed his thecnique a bit, he used to hold his guitar up a lot higher than he is nowadays, now it is hung really low. I wonder if that has to do with all this body building that he has gotten into.

One of the few bands who sounded great live..its almost like they recorded live' so that fans would get the same thing, when they saw them
in concert? Lynch is like Carlos...EVH...SRV...Jimi...EJ...has his own "Voice" and you immediately know its him within 5 seconds.. that isnt
an easy thing to do in the guitar world...

"Thanks for that! George is why I started playing guitar."

No way, dude. He (and Ed) are the reason I started playing, too.
8 strings? Because 6 is too easy?

I saw George recently with Souls of We, and I have to admit, I was not impressed with the Tone. He had a Lynch Box and a Marshall "Marsha". It took a while for the sound man to get it under control out front. He is definitely much less processed than back in the old Dokken days.

I saw that tour as well when it came to OKC when they opened for Judas Priest, I belive I counted 4 white Marshall 4x12's high by 6 white Marshall 4x12's across. 24 total and that's just on one side! Largest wall of Marshall 4x12's I've ever seen at any concert!! I sat way up high near the right side of the stage and also counld see a large rack loaded with what looked like all vintage Marshall heads. George's live sound has always been Killer, even when I saw them on the "Breaking the Chains" tour when he was useing the Solid State Randalls but it could have been vintage Marshalls as well at that show.
