That's because Loomis has maybe even more technicality than Broderick AND the distinctiveness of style of a Friedman. That second guitar job in Nevermore is REALLY a double-edged sword. You have to be a total badass to even keep up, but you're playing next to Loomis, you're gonna look second-rate by comparison. You've got to be self-assured and REALLY humble at the same time.
Since I just picked up the entire Nevermore back catalog I would have to say the 2nd guitar spot in the band would be a scary proposition. I was thinking they should go after somebody 'outside the box' for touring. Maybe a Dave Wiener type guy? He doesn't look metal but the dude is a pro and can clearly park his ego at the door.
btw, i think loomis made him look bad in nevermore
At the show I saw, Broderick had *no* trouble keeping up with Loomis. If anything, Loomis was the one who had to work harder when they traded leads.
Of course, they're both phenomenal guitarists, so such a comparison is extremely nit-picky.
It's one thing to criticize Broderick's style, since that's in the eye of the beholder. But criticizing his technique is crazy. That dude is basically note-perfect 100% of the time.

I think to a certain degree, thats part of the problem.
Sometimes it seems like you're listening to a midi file of old Nintendo game music sped up. A bit of character gets lost when everything is 100% dead-on all of the time. I'd imagine that's where the "robotic" complaint comes from.
Of course, not saying one should strive to be sloppy so their playing has "character" . But there should be a happy medium between technically flawless and personal idiosyncrasies so you don't sound like a machine churning out exercises.
I'm putting a end to the Loomis/Broderick debate right now. Broderick is a great and determined player, but he's not Loomis. He learned a bunch from Jeff, and his style is nowhere near as flawless as Jeffs. Chris is great, do not get me wrong. But Jeff is a fucking machine. Look up video's and do the homework, Jeffs picking, legato, and sweeping is unmatched in this day and age. Chris is great but it seems like he bites off more then he can chew sometimes. He has a very prominent future though.

This is on a strictly metal basis. Jeff couldn't touch the classical shit that Broderick can pull off.
Am I the only guy here not impressed with the sloppy 8 finger tapping?
Does he just do it with Megadeth, or on his own stuff too?
I can see Dave just going down the list of all the shred tricks there are, and wanting Chris to do them all so all bases are covered, thus Dave can brag that the guy he has now can do everything.
I can totally see Dave going "That Night Ranger dude - do some of THAT shit" and Chris maybe doing it without caring more so than he is doing a chore the boss asked him to do.
Of course if he does it on his own shit, then I just put too much thought into the idea for no reason! :ROTF:
Weird, I'm listening to Tornado of Souls from the Rock In Rio II concert. XD
So, I would have to say Friedman. I haven't seen Broderick show much emotion, and without emotion, what good does the technical skill do? In contrast, Marty puts his fucking soul into the solos, and still shows off his skill.

Friedman was a fraud. A metal guitarist wouldn't move to Japan to play J-pop. And his tornado of souls lead is pretty much a rip off of Hammetts Ride the lightning lead but it sucks. That bug eyed bitch never was metal, his cruddy leads sound like a kazoo and he bailed on everyone when times were tough like a bitch. Good riddance and don't come back.
Go cry in your corner you fucking puff, Friedman is 1000x the player Hammett will ever be.
And also Dime is a great guitarist but hell you need to give him some personal space and get your head out of his ass.
