he was a great player all around, but his lead tone was so grating to me i couldn't stand it - honestly the only lead i can recall from him was from walk the little slide and counterpoint like part in it - that was cool.

but his riffs were his highlight.

I understand. If you get a chance listen to "Psycho Holiday" off Cowboys From Hell and "Shattered". His lead were great. Unique in their own way.

Dime would have elevated Megadeth to the greatest metal band to ever grace this planet. He was a Heavy Metal Van Halen and more.

            This.

Marty has played flawless solos on every song he's ever done. Be that Megadeth or his own solo stuff or whatever. He fits the lead to the song - if it needs something tasteful and beautiful, he does it better than anyone:

(I can just imagine Broderick sweep picking like Malmsteen on speed over that)

If it needs something aggressive he gives you a "Tornado Of Souls", "Symphony of Destruction" or this:

Marty Friedman - " Ripped " Live In Japan 2007Line-up:Marty Friedman - GuitarsRon Jarzombek - GuitarsChris Catero - BassJeremy Colson - Drums

All Broderick does on "Endgame" is weedly weedly weedly sweep picking shit, it's as boring as fuck. And Mustaine even tries to do the same. It's fucking horrible!

Marty is one of the best players/writers the metal genre has ever produced. Broderick, on the evidence of Endgame, is just a guy who can play really fast, boring shred.

Dime was amazing too. Him and Marty, in terms of writing leads, were probably about on a par. I'd certainly agree Dime was a metal EVH. But this is silly - we all KNOW Dime and Marty were awesome.
This is about HOW MUCH MORE AWESOME Marty is than Chris Broderick.

Marty was the perfect lead player for Deth. All of his solos were amazing. Take "Tornado of Souls" or "Killing road" for instance. He had it all "soul" , "technique" and stuff. Just an example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Msfx7...eature=related

No disrespect to Dime. I have all of Pantera's stuff except for whatever that last one was. I can't think of a single bad guitar track on any of em. But I must've missed what it was he did that was so original to qualify him as a "metal EVH."

Where were all the raving Dime fans when he was alive?

Back to Broderick, I don't know his previous work well at all. But listening to Endgame and live Megadeth on youtube I'd say he does justice to Friedman and Poland's solos but doesn't do anything nearly as interesting or original as either. Is he a monster player? Hell yes. Is he "better" than Friedman or Poland either one? Not to my ears.

The ironic thing is that the very week Dime was killed there was a thread here (in Amps I believe) about Krank amps, how lame they were (not only tonally but also the marijuana imagery they used) and how much Dime sucked. After the tradgedy everyone jumped on the Dime was god bandwagon. I like most early Pantera stuff, though IMO after Far Beyond Driven the quality became a little more spotty. That hard living must have started to catch up with him. I saw Pantera live on the Vulgar tour in '92. Dime was great (especially at a time when guitar acrobatics were on the downslide) and by all accounts a nice guy in his personal life, but he was no Marty Friedman. Marty's playing is on whole different level.

Chris Broderick is great too, but again, he doesn't hold a candle to Marty IMO.

Imagine how awesome Peace Sells would've been with Kirk Hammett instead of Chris Poland. lol
I would take Hammett over Friedman at least. Marty could never write anything as good as the shortest straw lead.
