I will respect your opinion that you don't find him to be the best ever if you respect the opinions of those who feel otherwise.

And whoever said EVH invented Uli, it's more like Ed heard Uli, tried and falied to master his technique, and fell back on tapping as the easy way to get that kind of speed. Not that I don't love Ed's playing, but facts are facts and VH was covering "Catch Your Train" by Scorps at keg parties in Pasadena before they ever got signed.
Hi there. In response to this...opinion, I was not stating that people are not entitled to their own. In fact, my comments eluded to no such thing except for expressing my experience of a growing guitarist over the past 20+ years and my 'greatest' guitarist's. Apparently this entire thread is about peoples opinions. Am I wrong? However, when I read the title, I honestly thought this was going to be a string about peoples opinions of their favorite guitarist ever, not one individual (Uli). So, with that in mind, I do apologize if I offended anyone's feelings and stepped on their opinions based on my own. Peace.
Yesterday is history; tomorrow is a mystery; but today is a gift; that's why it is called the present.

I love Sails of Charon. What a great riff and groove in that song. Then the singing starts... ah well...

You don't like Klaus Miene's vocals? To each their own...

He's a little nasally for my tastes but he's got (had?) great pitch and range.

I entered into this thinking I'd hammer you with, "uh, no - it's Uli", and well...I stand corrected!

I'm 30 years in on watching guys play, and yeah - Uli is our liege, there is none greater...sure, horrible singer, but MAN, having had the chance to see him live from 3 feet away on several occasions...just insane...I was in the Blackmore camp when I was younger, but Uli takes neo-classical and just runs with it...
Crime doesn't pay. Neither does lutherie...

to me he is the heavy metal hendrix.
all his scorpions stuff is some of the best rock guitar recorded, blowin evh away in every way, years before anyone ever heard of evh, he should have had that kind of respect.

Uli to me, atleast tone wise, sounds like Ritchie Blackmore.

Only Ritchie Blackmore's playing is fucking terrible, where Uli definately knows how to play a guitar

To be honest I think Uli is just OK.

As an Hendrix/Blackmore clone he did sound cool in the late '70s, and perhaps had he possessed a truly astonishing technique, he could have been the "real" Maalmsteen.

His interpretation of classical pieces instead is very derivative and the guitar equivalent of Kenny G: airport music, to divulge very well known classical pieces among the masses. I mean, take his version of Recuerdos de la Alhambra, he actually plays the arpeggio with one guitar and overdubs the melody with a "fake" pick tremolo, whereas the ability to play both parts, with 3-finger tremolo, is a staple of any self respecting guitarist!

See, it's fine if he writes 500 pseudo-classical songs that all sound the same, but when you actually cover a "real" classical piece you better know what you're doing, because that stuff is hard to play right, and professional classical players have a talent and discipline with the instrument that Uli simply will never possess, in spite of his aspirations.
