See, the thing is, I don't like Vai's work or Yngwie's for that matter, but I still recognize that both have made significant contributions.

Don't forget about Jan Akkerman! Yes, Focus was kinda goofy, but no discussion of the origins of shred (in rock, anyway) is complete without him, imo.

I just cant see the reason everyone bows down to Uli. sure everyone loves to say he started playing guitar fast & melodic before God even created the world.......so what? big deal. the first cave man that used a rock to club another caveman over the head dont make him the best warrior ever.

It does make him a pretty influential guy, though.

Oh, yeah, Akkerman is awesome. I only learned of him when I lived in The Netherlands and the guy downstairs was playing his newer stuff all the time.

Granted, the thread title can mean many things. Newton was still hell of a physicist even if even freshman college students nowadays know more about physics than he ever did

He's an innovator in a way that neither you nor anyone on this board will ever be. If you play shred he's your godfather, whether you like it or not. It IS a big deal. What innovation have YOU introduced to modern guitar playing? Nothing? That's what I thought....

Sorry to be repeating myself, but if you type in scholar.google.com, you'll see a quote: "Standing on the shoulders of giants". If you look up the origin of this quote, it's attributed to Newton who said (something like): "If I see far, it's because I'm standing on the shoulders of giants". I think it's appropriate here...

Thats right. I have done nothing for modern guitar playing. and I dont shred.

So your up on the pedastal with Uli too? man there must not be much elbow room up there. does the BO get a bit gamey in the summer time So did you teach EVH how to play hammer ons? Or did you show pete townshend how to smash his guitars? or were you the guy that taught hendrix how to light his guitar on fire? Just curiuos what your contributions were since you pointed out that I have none.

holy shit its late........ I gotta run. I need to get over to the temple to pray to Uli.

Oh, I don't have any, but then I'm not slagging someone who's done more for shred guitar than I ever will either. That'd be you.

Afraid I don't. Sorry. I have never played rack units and don't intend to start now.
                            I like EL34s.
