  • You all time favorite guitar tones

Edit - Let's say these are tones you like so much, you could live with them on a desert island forever.

I'm making a list of my favorite guitar tones. Yeah, I suck that I don't have my own tone and I just try to copy other peoples tones. But that's what I like. Playing along to my guitar heros.

Looking to see what other people think so that I can add to my list of tones that I'd like to nail. So far I have:

    Savatage
    Iron Maiden
    Judas Priest
    Metallica
    Megadeth
    Jake E Lee
    Dio
    Black Sabbath
    Lynch
    Armored Saint
Van Halen (edit - early years)
    AC/DC
    GnR
    Queensryche
    Ratt
    Def Leppard
    Thin Lizzy
    Loudness
    Great White
    Rush

David Gilmour. Especially his tone from the live Wall cd.

EDIT--I somehow managed to forget about Steve Hackett also.

i gotta tell you, the first Boston album doesn't get enough recognition as far
as guitar tone goes, i'd never heard one like it, and then VH about 2 years after that.
problem was that boston made the same album the 2nd time around. and the 3rd.
Not helping the situation since 1965!

Here's a few of my favs off the top of my head:

            Metallica - Master of Puppets
Extreme - Pornographitti (starting to see an MP1 theme yet? )
Skid Row - Slave to the Grind
Exodus - Tempo of the Damned
Maiden - Seventh Son (very processed though)
Sambora - Keep the Faith tones.
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

Weird, but I was just thinking about this a few minutes ago. I'm not a Whitesnake fan at all, but Sykes' tone was perfection, especially on Still of the Night.

And seconding Tommy, it was something being a kid around the time Boston & the first couple of VH albums came out. It just made the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

Helloween - Halloween. Specifically Kai Hansen's tone for the leads he plays throughout the song. Like quintessential 80s tone with more kick to it. I've got it pretty close with my Soloist Standard (pro series).

NightRage - The entire Wearing a Martyr's Crown album. Just awesome super tight, super heavy metal tone.

Scorpions - Rock You Like a Hurricane and No One Like You. Great tone all around.

Iron Maiden always had great tones.

Tad Morose on the song "No Mercy".

How the hell could I forget the Scorpions!
Let's add Accept too, because I bought Balls to the Wall at the same time I bought Love at First Sting.

Also Billy Gibbons, Buck Dharma, JY, and I was never what you would call a Journey fan, but Neal Schon has always had great tone.

                    And Brian May.

Adrian Smith's live tone on Live After Death - love the over distorted, ring modulated wacko sound he's got - it really fits in the mix

                              Sacred Reich - Independent
