Didn't Perry just put out a solo album??? EVH-except for those 2 songs on the greatest hits, hasn't written anything good since 1984 anyway.

My best example for NOT putting out new stuff is Queensryche. They were great and classic with everything they did up through Empire. since then they have sucked ass with new material. Right now they're doing Queensryche Cabaret and Geoff Tate apparently thinks he's Dennis DeYoung/Barry Manilow now.
Bands who can't come up with anything new AND GOOD, should stick to their hits. I'd rather have a good nostalgic time than listen to brand-new garbage. Most bands lose their creative force and if I'm gonna watch them go through the motions, I'd rather they go through the motions with songs that I actually like instead of the 4th rewrite cycle on songs that were originally good.Ron is the MAN!!!!

These bands need to take a page from the Book of Dio. The dude was 58 in 2000 when he toured in support of Magica, which was one of his best albums ever. What a great show! A tour is so much more relevant when there is a kickass new album behind it.
At the same time, I saw AC/DC last year. That was totally nostalgic and retro, but also pretty cool!_________________________________________________

Unfortunately, there aren't too many new bands to pass the torch to.

You know what.......Fuck them all!!!! If they were back to just starting out they would be giving it their all. They would practice and work at writing killer songs and put out great performances to MAKE people want their product. Don't give me this bullshit that people only want to hear the old stuff - write something truly impressive and people will listen. DIO was/is a great example.
If you are no longer inspired just say so and go to your retreat. But, don't act like a puss and hide behind your notion that the fans don't want to hear anything new. I have been been on websites where people have been clamoring for new VH music for the past 20 years.
They should be thankful that they can make a great living off of work they did 30 years ago and still get paid. When was the last time any of you could say to your boss "hey, I did that 20 years ago, can you pay me now? - I don't feel like doing anything anymore".
Make some truly inspirational new music or go away!!

I'm divided - If I like the new stuff, I appreciate seeing it live. If I don't like the new stuff, then I couldn't care less. If I went to a Motley Crue show, I wouldn't want to hear anything recorded after Dr. Feelgood - because that's what I listened to. Conversely, two recent concerts - Metallica and Overkill both leaned on a lot of new stuff, and I dug both shows.
Sometimes new stuff just isn't as good as "Walk this Way."-------------------------

Realistically most bands who fall into this category are not gonna quit music and gto to work at the local hardware store just because their creative well has dried up. They are gonna keep playing shows if thy can sell tickets. Fine, but I don't want to go see Queensryche to hear Tribe in its entirety. Or some cheesy Cabaret Liza Minelli bullshit either.
IF you still have the spark, I'm open to the new stuff. If your spark is gone, play the songs you wrote when you still had the spark. And have the discernment to know where you fall in the continuum. That's not too much to ask.Ron is the MAN!!!!

It's a decision they make. If they decide they don't have gas in the tank, if they decide they don't want to be in a studio any more, or deal with a record company, or do anything really except travel the country every summer, that's their choice. For ME I would be disappointed if some of MY favorite acts decided to just go "oldies"....but at some point they probably will. If it gets old and it gets tired, I'll stop going.
Also if they use their concerts as a long-form commercial for their new album and I think the new stuff sucks, I will also stop going.
Everything in life is a trade off. They're trying to keep the ball rolling in both scenarios different ways- but in the end they are striving for the same thing they strove for as young bands- keeping a fan base going, in one form or another. Some may decide that, although not being on the road AT ALL, to take the argument in the opposite direction, is going to cost them $$$$ and fans, they would prefer to be with their families. Also their choice, and a tradeoff they've accepted.
So do what you gotta do! I would be super pissed if Maiden wasn't coming around this summer, and I'd be pissed, for myself, if they weren't dropping a new album too, but I really have no right to be pissed. Fandom is a two way street, give and take. If a band doesn't "give" you joy anymore, then don't give em your money.
Also, if you don't like the oldies thing, I hope like heck you're buying your favorite act's new stuff every time it comes out.

I see nothing wrong with giving up on new music if you just don't give a crap about it anymore. It's kind of a curious position to be in though because it seems like that would be the point where you just quit, when you are admitting that you have nothing new to offer but I guess these bands have found a market for what they are doing. Personally if I am going to go see a bunch of old guys play a bunch of songs I have heard 1000 times already, I would rather go to a bar and see a cover band. That way I can get a better variety, they'll probably be having more fun, I will be able to afford the show AND beer, and maybe even play pool or darts while I am at it.

Done with Mirrors was Aerosmiths last good album, that was a while ago. Sure, their newer albums had some catchy tunes, but not
nearly as strong as the first 4 albums, to my ear anyway.
On a side note, there isn't one poster here who wouldn't sign up to be a "parody of themself", and be in the position to decide
if they wanted to make new music or not. Am I right? of course i am-lolNot helping the situation since 1965!
