Devin Townsend has to be mentioned here as well.
I like his wild stuff as much as his more silent moments. Great singer and songwriter and he always comes up with awesome chords and weird progressions and rythms with his open tunings.
4:15 in the link above for example is some stuff I'd never get into my mind myself.
And it's always fun to figure out his songs with a guitar in usual tuning.
Such intense music. I pretty much love all of his work and he's still growing on me every day.
And I love his sense of humor!

A lot of great responses and I agree with most of them. Probably not the 'most' but certainly underrated in the 80's was Icon. I loved their early stuff.

Dragging up an old thread, but I just found some of my old albums at the folks house tonight.
Maybe not the most underrated, but sure didn't get the break they were due.
And this whole album kicked ass.

Prolly the purpose I guess..I'm partial to metal. That's all I've listen to..as ya know.
I've been playing alot of Coroner, Psychotic Waltz, Anancrusis, Last Crack, Toxik, Sabbat, Atheist, Nocturnus, Hexenhause..ect.
On the same kinda note..the new Forbidden, Heathen, Helstar, Tenet truly kicks ass IMO!!
