Van Halen sounded very unconventional which made them special in the world of pop music and DLR was a good example of unconventional singing manner and stage presence at the time. Hard rock meets vaudeville. There was theatrics in rock music before but DLR actually copied vaudeville singers, big band/swing performers which the glam/shock rock performers did not.

But watch all the lame glam rock whiners who came after him cop everything Dave did! How many big boofy blonde bouffants launched scissor kicks off drum risers in music vids in the late 80s? Except Dave was a fuckin' man about it - all the pretenders looked like your little sister in fishnets and mascara. Dave was as influential as a frontman as Eddie was as a guitarist.

Hagar is much more conventional, while technically better he is also much more safer and appeals more to suburban housewives which is the worst kind of artistic death.

I agree, their first album " Welcome to the bris " was incredible. But, like many bands their second album had a shrinking following even with 2 incredible singles( schmegma + nut juice). It was almost like they were wiped off the face of the music industry.

The 2nd album, "Uneven Sack" in my mind only strengthened the bands true message, which was
to go on, regardless of record sales or how their nuts were hanging.

The third album "Testes, Testes, One, Two, Three?!?!" was actually released on two kidney shaped picture discs, but didn't play back well due the the "authentic hair follicles" present on the vinyl.
