  • Sammy Hagar burns bridges in his uncensored memoir, 'Red'

I'm guessing Sammy's not a fan of the Van Halen Brothers....

You know what? Sammy technically is a better singer, that's common knowledge, but for the last time,
Van Halen smokes, pounds, destroys, and pisses on anything and all that Van Hagar did. Arguing about music is stupid because
people hear things differently, and even comparing these two bands may be even more stupid, VH is two thoroughly and completely
different bands when you switch out the frontmen.
Van Halen- how do you explain the inexplicable? America's greatest rock and roll export if you ask me.
Van Hagar-i don't know, i'll refrain from bagging on them, they did sell a shitload of albums, who am i to bag right? it's just
like a too safe, watered down band when i compare them to the original. they should have changed the name of the band when i think about it,
i think they may have held on to more Roth fans than they did, then again, naaaah!!!!! -lol

Montrose was the original badass guitar-driven rock band.

I'd rather see Sammy on a rough night than Dave at his best. Atleast you'll get half the words to the songs, and a nice guitar duel

I can't stand Hagar and his fake redneckish accent and party guy persona when he plays live. However I'm a sucker for these books. He's right about the bum Eddie. He was at NAMM at that time, completely wasted and looking horrible.

Should be a good read for most VH fans.

Sammy is such a phony douche bag, always trying to act like a nice guy but never could hide how much of an narcissist he really is.
Funny that he talks about how Eddie looks, the first time I saw a Van Hagar video I thought who the fuck is this bum and why he is wearing rags while fronting Van Halen? Always bragging about his businesses and shit while Dave who has everything one could ever dream of worked for an ambulance in The Bronx. I wish I could find the video where Neal Schon is making fun of Sammy who somehow became the producer of HSAS when all the music was written and recorded by others long before Sammy finally entered the studio to record his vocals.

I'll just say what i've always said about this. The suckage that was Van Hagar was 90% or more Ed & Alex's call, just like the early good stuff was. The "Van Hagar" sound started with Jump. That's where they were going, no matter who the singer was.

this is true Dana, but even so, "Me Wise Magic" and "Can't get this stuff no more" were the two tunes they made with Roth in the studio
for the greatest hits album in the mid 90's, and i thought those two tunes smoked any of the tunes they did with sammy as well.
This is just the way my ears hear it though, i'm not saying i'm right, it's just the way my ears are programmed. when they announced the breakup,
I can honestly tell you I was shocked, but when they said they were going forward with Sammy Hagar, I was was heavily bummed. Sammy
can sing, he has a very good voice, but his tunes just don't grab me in any way. Too safe for me, if that mnakes any sense at all to any of you.

Sammy, yellow and red, pajama pants wearing Ronald McDonald wannabe frontman ragging on Eddie's appearance? Ha ha. Good singer, but they made him a hell of a lot of money so why bite the hand that fed him when it is inevitable Sammy will be back when they are 65 doing a reunion tour/money grab.

I've seen Sammy solo (I Can't Drive 55 tour) and three times with VH, but the two times I saw VH with Dave were what it was all about. Just dirtier, rawer, more agressive, etc. Hearing them hit the stage with Unchained was amazing in their prime.

Why does the VH webstore sell all this Sammy/Cabo Wabo/Chickenfoot stuff though, including Sammy's bio, if they are at odds? Obviously cash is at the heart of it, but its strange.

i saw every tour VH ever did with Roth. I went to the first Van Hagar show, and
i never went back after that. it wasn't out of allegiance or anything silly like that, I just didn't like the music pure and simple.
Larz- in regards to Sammy, nothing beats the "I can't drive 55" jumpsuit for me, that one takes the cake, i can laugh all day at that outfit.
That doesn't excuse Roth, he wore some very silly stuff, but he somehow pulled it off no matter what he was wearing, he could get away with anything.

I did not go to any of the tours with Roth after the breakup though, I didn't want to go and see them suck, it would have broke my heart, and alot of my friends who saw them with Roth before me told me it wasn't good at all.

Yup, but what some folks don't get is that good voice was common for rock bands while DLR on the other hand was unique, one of the most unique dudes ever, he spent a lot of time in New York listening and watching to big band/swing singers, vaudeville performers etc. and combined those elements with raw early 60's type of rock'n'roll characteristics. Who else has done something like that?

but the part that sucks for roth is that his schick is something that hasn't been able to stand the test of time. i saw him live a few years back, and even then he looked like don knots singing VH tunes, while going "oooo baby, why don't we meet up after the show" while winking at 20 year old chicks that were creeped out. it was disturbing to say the least.....
                            GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

                            and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

Hagar started out with a little bit of an edge, but he turned into the West Coast Jimmy Buffett with all of that Cabo Wabo crap. "Try our smokin' new grill sauce!" I guess it does work a little better with old age than Roth's act, but still...

That is a great point, and I've got no answer for it. I think the original break happened because Dave wanted to keep the more hard/wild image & Ed wanted to go more pop. Those tunes had some of the original fire, but I bet Ed's ego wouldn't let him keep doing that, like he'd be admitting Dave was right all along.
