To get back to the thread, if I remember correctly even Jackson started as a "custom" boutique guitar, custom built for Randy right? At the begining they were all custom shop jobs? You can still have the custom shops at these places build you one to your (even you are a famous rock star) excact specs? I don't know the history or story on others but any small time luthier that makes guitars and charges arms and legs for them takes orders just like anyone else. When the volume of orders becomes greater than production they have to expand or stay small. When they expand, i.e. Grover Jackson its like a snow ball effect until someone like Fender sees a business oportunity and buys you out. So bassically if you have a USA Jackson you have a production line custom guitar, right? Thats why they are so popular becuase back in the day we would see these "custom" guitars and save get one too. Just becuase you get a record deal and go on tour doesn't mean you loose your frame of reference in life. WE are what our past has made us?

Even Toni Iomi played a small custom shop SG back in the day, and that company has grown and I can order one just like his, and I'm not talking about the Gibson one. So if its a small boutique now, once it hits the hands of people like Hetfield, King, or Freidman, its only a matter of time before orders will surpass production and you have a big company, like ESP. Started small as custom boutique, now BIG like Wal-Mart!

    Yeah capitalism!
