Viv has his modded but rest assured Phil's are bone stock JMP-1's

The Mesa and the 2nd JMP-1, Alesis and TC are all backups in case.. sending the signal to FOH

I would have guessed the mesa 20/20 was just for backstage warm up stuff, tech working testing, etc.... just so he has sound back there without generating 5 billion deceibels for warmups thru the house sound.

That makes sense using the 20/20 for warm-up,backup etc.probably also comes in handy for setting and tweaking effects as well.

The lower watt backstage amps prolly helps keep his funk in check..

It was actually direct from Trace. He saved some of my customers amps after some very bad shipping and handling. Busted Boxes and all. Plus he was listed on the voodooamps.com site for quite a while. Haven't visited there lately. But the fact he also had some V-Plex heads built and shipped to him. Plus there has been a quote from Phil on the Voodoo website.
Make no mistake. I know what I am talking about. I don't need to make things up. I give you what I KNOW.
I have been in this business as long as I have been in the working world.
He is entitled to get bad press once in a while. I have never heard a bad one. But I know they must exist. But he obviously does most of them well. So words like "muddy" are a subjective term. And some people don't have enough experience with high end amps and mods to give an educated 2 cents.
I am sure that in his beginnings he learned from trial and error like everyone else. And that would include mistakes.
Imagine your mistakes when you were a kid being the only thing people brought up about you? Wouldn't be right or fair.
An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

                ^^^

Well, whenever I made a mistake my dad punched me in the face. I thank him for that actually..he's a wise man. Now I am.

I bought my JMP-1 new when they came out. I actually had the Marshall ss preamp before that which were the 9000 series..which I didn't like at all. Heard, played and owned more amps I can remember. At that time three other friends bought JMP-1s, and heard MANY since..none having the "mojo" mine seem to have. Some were modded by my freind Mike of DR Z..even by Voodoo. I prefer them stock..at least mine.

Waaaaayyy back in the day (approx '86) My freind/bandmate sent his mint white '82 Marshall to Jose Arredondo in Cali. Almost two years and $1300 later, he finally got it in his hands. I was there. Apparently many pros played it at Jose's shop including Vai, DeMartini..and some dude named Ed. Well, to make a long story short..it sound like complete ass. After many months and tears later, a local tech (Empirical sound) put it back stock. With much luck, money and a Hail Mary ..It sounded great again. I heard he still has it, but moved onto building amps himself.

As a cop in Cleveland I've spent hundreds of lunch hours at Dr Z's shop. It was fun. As much as I love Mike, I couldn't play ANY of his many models without a TS-9. He kept promising me he'd built an amp for players with gain needs such as myself. I wonder if he did..I don't know. His demographic was mainly blues and classic rock dudes like Joe Walsh, who also hung out there. I settled on a Uberschall back in 2002. As well as my beloved Marshall rack 9200/JFX-1/JMP-1..and a BBE 422. into four straight 1960 cabs in stereo. I recently had an amp "shootout" here with my Bogner, my kid's 6505+ and his bud's B52 (I know, but it was here) All into one Marshall stock 1960 cab..The Marshall easily slayed 'em all...on all counts.

It was like a race between a Corvette and a Chevette...or my Factory Five Racing MKIII Cobra and my Ford Focus. But you get the idea.

Whatever the consensus..be as it may. During my 33 years of sonic quest. I KNOW what works best for me. Amps..they're not magic boxes. The player has the magic..the boxes are just tools, and that's subjective...Craftmen or Snap-on? I think many feel the tools makes the player..it's the other way 'round.

Nothing against your Voodoo bro, I'm certain he knows da shit, but I haven't a use for him...then, now or later. I have more than enough coin to buy ANY gear I wish..but I have it.

                BillZ

OOOHHH ..being a Cleveland cop for many years I've done many good things, but mistakes are the ONLY things people seem to focus on. Yeah, that's not fair..but that's life.

I find that to be the case too. I know alot of folks diss the JMP-1, but I like mine. every players has different opinions of what sounds good.

Don't get me wrong. I never said the stock JMP-1 was bad. Thats your assumption. As for your gear .You have very good taste. I have had a few marshalls in my day. ALL stock.
But I play a Lee Jackson XLS-1000 head. Its that Marshall tone that I love. But Marshall never put out. I sound good through anything I play through. I have some nice rigs. (nothing as big as yours)
But I can run 6550's all day long and be happy.
I came up poor and either begged, borrowed or stole to get what little I had coming up. A mother with a drug habit so bad that she attempted to kill me 3 times growing up. And no cops around when one was needed.
But I was saved by the power of Heavy Metal and raw Elkhart Indiana shredders that I was gratefull to grow up around in my teenage years.
You probably thought I was going to go all church on you huh?
Holycross is the last name I was born into. Its a last name. Not that I would assume you would be so dumb as so many have before you to assume my name was somehow meaning anything else.
I have had so many hard ass folks see my name and want to pick a fight because they were pagans or looney tunes for some over rated fable about a red man with a pitch fork, that I quit paying these folks or paying them much mind. But since you are a cop. I will give you the benefit of a doubt that you have better sense then to fuck up like that.
Your story is what it is. I just think its nice you got wisdom from your old man.
We love our parents despite what they did.
I loved mine all the way to the grave. I never shed a tear. And praised the day that my mother left this Earth. She died at 51. I loved her. But I have been so much better off sinse she died. I have been much happier sinse. She gave me wisdom to. Those that you are supposed to believe are there for your own good, are the ones not to trust or give to much room for.
I say turn your rig up and play till you cannot play anymore. Then the next day repeat.
Play hard. Play for your life. Play because you can. And fuck the religious bullshit. It does not make you a better player. Hard work and practice does.
I have played stages all over the country with many amps. And I can say I think we can both agree that tone starts in your fingers. It has been my sole source of income many times in life, on big stages and clubs and show towns like Branson Missouri.
Not lately though. LOL. I do security to make ends meet now.
Untill I can get another gig. Its my life. And I will live it like I please for my wife and kids who have traveled with me, and will again.

One thing I took from this video ( and the other Phil interviews I've watched) is how genuinely humble he seems and very appreciative. He takes the time to explain things bit by bit and always enjoys it each and every time. Too bad more artists weren't like that.

Having had the pleasure of meeting Phil many times over the last 20 years, I can account to just how warm and humble he is. Never arrogant nor stuck up. He loves to talk shop about guitars, amps and FX and pretty much anything music related.

                        Super classy guy!

for my PC1, I passed on those all-titanium saddles, but did get the titanium string blocks from FU. also went with all the stainless steel screws (lock nut, saddle, string block). those were all pretty much 'comfort' factors for me, knowing the tolerances are higher and aren't as likely to crack or strip out.

however, I did get a brass block upgrade from FU and it's definitely worth it to my ears. right away, I literally had to check to see if I'd left the sustainer turned on. no joke... that much more natural sustain and resonance, with harmonics jumping out more and jumping out easier. some say it affects the tone (improves in certain ways), but I didn't hear that... which is fine, as I'm ok with the tone the way it is.

those guys like Phil Collen and Michael Wilton probably get the full titanium set-up as part of an endorsement deal with FU (or they can already afford it). but I'm not up for that much for that any titanium parts other than those string lock blocks. even so, I don't see myself doing it on all my guitars. but I will be getting more brass blocks.

                          just my opinion.
