Um…can we like both Roth and Sammy?
I think they both offered something different. I don’t think anyone could possibly disagree that technically, Sammy is a much better singer then Roth. Roth has (had) a swagger that Sammy couldn’t come close to. I mean VH in the 80’s with Roth? No one could touch them at the time. I think Roth puts the “rock” in rock star and he pushed VH over the top. I don’t think lyrically Roth is going to change the world but do you really care? I don’t.
I loved VH’s stuff with Sammy. All of it! I was going through my teen years when Sammy joined and I can tell you I played the shit out of his stuff. I feel like with Sammy it’s a completely different band altogether. It never really felt like VH to me. It sounded like a great band with Eddie playing guitar. Kick ass but not VH.
The new VH album, to me, sounds like VH. The more I listen, the more I hear pure Van Halen..
Personally, I hope they have more in the vault.-Now....shut up n play yer guitar

I think the Roth vs. Sammy fans thing was ignited by Sammy himself who in the past year first said they wouldn't put out an album, then said it would suck because they were using old ideas, then when it did come out said it wasn't that good and that they could have and should have done better. He has gone so far as to say that Chickenfoot is better than Van Halen and then rationalizes that by saying he is a better singer, Joe is a better guitarist, etc.
Is all this shit talk really necessary coming from an alleged adult? So yeah, blame Sammy for this schism - he caused it single-handedly.Ron is the MAN!!!!

BREAKING NEWS: Uli Lee Roth is singing for Van Halen ! Dave can't take no more!
NEW BREAKING NEWS: Van Halen's new contract includes that ALL Brown Peeps MUST be excluded, or they will NOT perform scheduled venue.
I'm so glad Ed is doing what Ed does best, and doing exactly why I play guitar and here Talkin' 'Bout Peeps. With THAT said, Uli Roth, Paul Gilbert and Jeff Loomis SMOKE him! You see, Ed has been outta the scene for so long..guitarists he inspired ran with the ball, and kept Runnin' with the Devil.
With that said..the new album is growing on me, because I hear what inspired me long ago. But with THAT said..I listen to other players that took music to new levels...levels I havn't achieved. I achieved Ed's level long ago, but I moved onto things I need to strive for. Bass included. I haven't played bass in years, but I'm better than ever. When I pick up a 4 string..it's instant magic."Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!
"Well, your friend would have Bell's Palsy, which is a facial paralysis, not "Balls Pelsy" like we're joking about here." Toejam's attempt at sensitivity.

Not that I really care all that much for either, but give the man his due credit...The 2nd Amendment: America's Original Homeland Defense.

There are a lot of better players than Ed nowadays, but still a lot of worse ones working in bands too. Sometimes you want a good hamburger and not a steak that day. This album doesn't smoke any of the classic Roth VH albums, but it fits in with them without shame and that is a good thing!Ron is the MAN!!!!

Maybe Sammy kept up with Van Halen when they were an opening act but he was never an arena headliner on a massive scale. "I Can't Drive 55" was his only really big hit, and maybe "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy" was a minor hit. Maybe he played an arena in the Bay Area as a hometown boy - hell Dokken headlined Irvine Meadows for Under Lock and Key, but it didn't make them an arena headlining act overall.
Daves popularity post VH was more a mixture of Curiosity because of his outrageous antics and people desperately tryiing to hold onto what little there was left of the old VH sound, just a look into history and how long his popularity lasted is a testament to that.Prosecutors will be violated...

Nobody used a whammy bar like that and it took a while to figure out how to get that much gain out of an amp and it took a while to figure out it was a Phase 90. Eruption was literally a mind blowing musical journey for every rock guitar player on the planet. None of us had ever heard anything like it. And thats just Eddy!!!

This was back where there was still general admission so there was no designated seats. Rock and roll weekend, Red, and Trans am were all over the radio back then as well as Bad Motor scooter and Rock the Nation.

Between Montrose and his solo stuff he had a ton of hits and was extremely well known and respected as a singer, songwriter and guitar player. He still is. Sammy rules. I just like Dave better in VH.

If this is what you were into when Van Halen were opening for Sabbath, power to you! As I said, maybe he was equal to them when they were openers. As for his solo career versus Dave's, they each have 2 platinum albums, but Dave's are multiplatinum and Sammy's are not. Sammy has not had a platinum solo album post-Van Halen though.Ron is the MAN!!!!
