I'm not sure it was an epic fail though. I mean I think it did go platinum.....I guess chics liked it?

CFH is talking about VH1, as in the music channel, within the context of the MTV music channel.

All of the Roth Van Halen albums were multiplatinum by the time Sammy joined the band, so no way was he as big as or bigger than Van Halen. He was longer established because he had been in signed bands since 1973, but he was more of a journeyman rocker than a superstar. Basically he had a 5-year jump on them as far as being a recording artist.
If I recall... fuzzy logic!!! At the exact point in time that Dave left VH, they really took a dive in popularity. Dave, on the other hand quickly formed his own band and literally kicked VH's ass for a while. Then.. VH hired Sammy Hagar and VH kicked everybodies asses with hit after hit after hit and non stop video's. Then both Dave and VH's careers went down the crapper but Sammy Hagar kept on being cool. Maybe not musically but overall.
Fast forward to today. Sammy is bitter. He should be. He got screwed. Dave is happy. He got a second chance that is well deserved.
Michael Anthony could give a rats ass. There is some serious deep seated stuff that we don't know about regarding him and VH.

Dave' solo material is quality but the songs and video's that made his solo career so popular were charactures of himself. It was intentional. I am sure of it. Dave is a very smart guy and knew exactly what he was doing. Remember Dave TV? All Dave... All Night!

          • I had heard Dave did California girls cuz he liked the beach boys groing up and wanted to do his version. Which as lame as it was it still rocked. Jason Becker did that song proud. Granted its not my favorite song but its well done and I usually don't change the channel on the rare occasion its played on the radio. I really like the new vh. It's not earth shattering but its still van halen. And I can hear remnants of the older vh stuff in it. These songs were all writen decades ago and then ed probably had a different vision did them. But he's older and has changed his musical visions and song writing to some extent. If you don't change at least a little u die in the music industry.

There was definitely some competition between the bands too.. Dave puts out "Eat em and smile" the a little while later VH puts out OU812 (Oh! You ate one to?). I always got a chuckle out of that thinly veiled insult.

Van Halen vs Van Hagar... Haha, I really thought this age old argument went away when it was proven a moot point by both of thems popularity. I am a HUGE Sammy Hagar fan, I just didn't care for him with VH. On the other side of the coin, I am also a HUGE VH fan, just didn't care for them with Sammy. Not that the music was bad, it wasn't. The Van Hagar years were filled with musical genius. I just liked my dose of Van Halen with a shot of Swagger and arrogance, Sammy didn't have that, Dave did.
Comparing their solo careers are apples and oranges.. Sure, Dave went multiplatinum.. it wasn't really his musiic that took him there. It was his association with the old VH sound, his outrageous behavior and his ability to surround himself with musical powerhouses like Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan who n their own right were already masters of their art having a pretty impressive following, hence, even more sales.
Sammy had............Ronne Montrose early on who was a rising star, but at the time, not bright enough to take the world by storm like Eddie, Vai, Sheehan and everyone else Dave had going in his favor. So, yeah, record sales mean squat.

I'm not on team anything.. I love both VH and Hagar... I'm just glad the stars have aligned for both of them so they may each shine again...

Jason Becker didn't play on "Crazy from the Heat."

Van Hagar were Ballad-era Journey. They sold based on people wanting anything with that name. Dave's music was what sold him, and yes Sheehan and Vai were awesome, but their followings were small. Sheehan had only been in Talas who were not that well-known. Vai was more known for being Zappa's little Italian Virtuoso, even though he had already replaced Yngwie in Alcvatrazz (and couldn't replicate Yngwie's leads at that time)

You are reverse-revising history - DLR MADE Vai and Sheehan household names compared to what they had been before. Vai got $2 million to join Whitesnake specifically because of what he did in the DLR Band. It wasn't from Flex-able!! Their playing was awesome on those albums but it was Dave's vision all the way, as evidenced by the fact that neither of them sounded like that on their own efforts. Dave gave them a focus that they never again had. As for record sales, they are the measure. As I posted above, Sammy was making shitty disco music when Van Halen I came out. I loved him in Montrose, some of his solo stuff, and even some Van Hagar. The only way I blame him for Van Hagar's overall suck is that while I envision Dave telling Ed "Come ON dude, you can do better than THAT!", I imagine Sammy saying every burp and fart was great, and Ed's playing suffered from that. Sometimes Jimmy Buffett just doesn't get your best out of you.

Dude! I'm not disputing any of that. I'm just saying that I think you under estimate the following Dave brought with him when he went solo just for the fact that HE sounded more like VH than VH did at the time and peple were desperately trying to fill that void. If Dave went solo and JUST did stuff like Just a Giggalo and Cali Girls the interest would have waned lng before it did.
I also thing you under estimate the impact of his band members. Although Vai and Sheehan were still fairly new to the world, they were still pretty well known as virtuosos in their own right. There was a lot of die hard Rock freaks that, while they had not nessicarily been exsed to those two, they HAD heard of them and WERE curious as to who DLR would get to be his Ed or Mike figuratively. Not to mention that it was well known that Dave was the backbone behind VHs over the top stage show so people were curious and excited at the same time.
Ultimately, Curiousity brught the droves of people to buy the first record, the music was what made them buy the next.

As for Sammys Disco music?!?!?! Dude! Three lock box? Heavy Metal? VOA? Red? Ok, Standing Hampton sucked balls, I'll give you that. But his list of Rock is LOADS more extensive than his "suck" list.

He was in VH as well? I must have missed that era of the band. I didnt realize they did a beach, drinking umbrella drinks and eating hamburgers stint of the band. I bet it was better than VHIII was.
