Wow, brings tears to my eyes to see Eddie playing this well again. Over the past 10 years I have been to several Eddie, w/ both Sammy and DLR, shows where Eddie was a complete disaster. I really did not think he would ever be able to live up to his legacy again. Thanks for posting that video.

As for A Different Kind of Truth, I heard Tattoo on the radio Day 1 and was unimpressed. Then later that day I saw the goofy video for Tattoo with DLR looking like he had raided Elton John's closet and dancing around like an idiot and was SERIOUSLY unimpressed. I bought the CD and let is sit around for 2 weeks not wanting to listen to it, fearing what horrendous music it might contain. Finally this week with an afternoon to myself and working out in the garage, I plugged the CD into my garage sound system which gets pretty loud and took a listen. Suddenly Tattoo didn't sound quite as bad and the rest of the CD sounded like the 1978 Van Halen I had grown up on. I had to give it a 2nd listen all the way through and it got even better. Was it anything new and groudbreaking ? No. Did they rehash old demos because they couldn't come up with anything new worth a crap ? Probably. Do I really care ? Dunno, just enjoying a trip through memory lane and wondering if they have enough old demo material to pull this one off again in the future.

Now, regarding the release of Tattoo as the first single, I'm trying to figure out if the marketing team is pure genius or beyond freaking stupid ???

Hmm... At one of them. I brought my GF to one of those shows, and I met a girl at the other one that turned into a one-week one-night stand.

Half the guys here would suck on Eddy's testicles just to get near him. Hell, you'd probably suck him off and swallow for a line of coke and an autograph.

I saw a youtube video of them performing Tattoo....... its not pretty. I was very unimpressed. it basically sucked. Roth looks terrible, he is dressed like a clown. I dont get why most rock stars have to wear ridiculous clothes all the time. it makes them look like idiots. their stage presence is about as exciting as my coffee table. Eddie's playing is just.......boring. to me, its like he hasnt grown as a guitarist in 30 years. Sure, he came out with some amazing shit and turned the music world on its side and I give him credit for that. he was raw rock and roll until 1984 then kind of refined his style as a musician with adding keyboards and his songwriting style changed a bit. then 5150 was a big change. since then its been no growth, just throwing the same hamburger through the meat grinder over and over again. to me there comes a time when bands just need to know when to hang it up and that time is now for VH. they rode their wave, had their time in the sun. its time to pack up their beach blanket and beer cooler and head home.

Edit-OH and for the record, Sammy kicks ass, and so does Mike Anthony. those guys will be kickin ass and rockin for years to come. I think VH should start researching retirement homes.

Sorry, while they did make some good music with Sammy that I really enjoyed, they have had success both with and without him. Sammy hasn't been anywhere near as successful away from them as he was with them.

but Sammy has been one hell of a lot more successful than THEY have been without him. Sammy is a survivor. in the end, its going to be cockroaches, Cher, and Sammy. that will be it. OH, yea, and the cockdragon.

Think about it....... they used to be awesome, but now they are weak. Think of them like Murph and the magic tones......they were once the backbone, the nerve center to a GREAT rock and roll band. now they should be doing covers of Quando Quando Quando in a holiday inn lounge somewhere.



I prefer to remember them when they were great.

Sammy Hagar has had a long and very popular career, VH notwithstanding. As for Sammy in VH? That was mutually beneficial for all parties. VH without Hagar would probably have flopped.

Excellent post. I can put myself in the same category as you. Van Halen I came out when I was in HS and I have seen them Many times during the early 80's. Being that they are in their 50's now (well 3/4 of them are) what do some of these idiots expect??? I just picked up the CD this morning and I am totally loving this thing. Some of those songs sound right out of the early 80's. When I played 'Stay Frosty' and heard the solo, I just had a big shit eating grin on listening to Eddie wail away. Great album, and I have to say the last song, "Beats Workin' " just kicks major A$$.

I am not dissapointed in the least, and I am LOOKING FORWARD to seeing them at Madison Sq Garden next month!!!

+1 Excellent post. I remember the first time I heard You Really Got Me on the radio. It was 1979. I was in the cafeteria in senior year of HS. It was a religious forever life changing experience when I heard that guitar solo. It was on a radio station called WAPP who soon afterwards when to from rock to all disco. Anyway, I went out and bought VH1 and saw them a year or 2 after for the VH2 concert at The Palladium in NYC. 11th row. My ears were bleeding for a week. They were amazing and cemented themselves in my favorite bands of all time category. I fell out of love when Sammy joined the band not because I am not a fan of Sammy. I think he is great and writes great songs. I just liked Van Halen better with Dave. Forget Gary. That was a despiration move.
I saw the first VH reunion tour with Dave and Wolfgang and I thought they were great. I heard that this tour they are even better.
Good for them. They deserve it.
