I'm not much of a Def Lep fan, even their early NWOBHM stuff seemed (IMO) to be among the weakest of the genre. That said Phil Collen seems like a good guy, a decent enough guitarist, and a big name for Jackson so I have no complaints.

What I never understood however, is why so many other metal bands catch so much shit for "selling out" but hardly anyone ever mentions or gripes about Def Leppard selling out? All I can figure is because they "sold out" so early in their career and no one really knew or gave a damn about them beforehand.

Alas, I wasn't around at the time, so If I'm wrong about anything I said feel free to enlighten/flame me.

Probably because most people had never heard of the band until Pyromania. I wasn't around then either TBH, I only got into them when Hysteria was already pretty big. Despite the fact Hysteria wasn't a HEAVY album, you could tell it was made by hungy young guys with some balls. I think their modern stuff, particularly the X and Yeah! albums sound like bored old men treading water.
But, like I said, even on the X tour, they fucking killed live.

Ok, I'mnot a fan of the PC-1 or any Leppard album after Pyro, but Phil definitely does NOT suck balls...lol.

Ok, I'll chime in and set all you douchepuddles straight

                1. Pyromania was written and recorded when Phil joined the band...he had no input on the songs. His only contribution was to recut guitar solos, which he did well IMO in that they were a good fit for the songs even though they were fairly simple.

                2. On Through the Night and High and Dry were both great NWOBHM albums with killer riffs and hooks. Pyromania still had a bit of that but they were obviously moving in a "poppier" direction...it was the last listenable Def Lep album.

                3. Phil is a fine player when he plays within his ability. His performance on That Metal Show was an affront to guitar players and music lovers everywhere...he clearly deserves an elbow to the bridge of the nose or two punches to the solar plexus for that abortion of a performance. It was so bad that I felt embarrassed just watching the mess.

                4. Phil's JMP-1 rig sounds awesome. If you don't think so, you're wrong. Fact!

                5. Vivian Campbell is one of the greatest players to come out of the 80's metal scene. He had a certain aggressiveness and abandon to his style that set him apart from the LA contingent (Lynch, Lee, Demartini, etc). He was one of my biggest influences at that time and I continue to hold his early work in high regard. What he played on the first two Dio albums stands the test of time and earns him a free pass from taking shit over what he does today. I can't blame him for taking a paycheck...I'd be waxing my chest and balls and prancing around onstage to "Pour Some Sugar on Me" too if I never had to work a day job again.

Before Pyromania came out I considered Def Leppard an AC/DC rip off/cover band.

I like Viv's playing on those early Dio albums. He was a talented kid. But he was always a disciple of Moore.

Always thought Vivian Campbell kicked arse. Like most I was let down by his joining DL and "disappearing". I found this on Bravewords.com awhile ago and thought it was funny:

There was a recent interview with Vivian Campbell where he said he isn’t challenged guitar-wise in Def Leppard, and that you get all the good guitar parts. How do you respond to that statement?

A: "Because it’s all my shit. Vivian joined a band that I helped create. He’s coming into my house! It’s not all the good parts, it’s the Def Leppard sound that me and Steve created. We got together with Mutt Lang, and there was already a sound in place. Also, we play all the hits live, which were written before Viv was in the band."

Phil's right, most of his stuff is shit, compared to VC. I can't stand anything post-Pyromania either, but as proof, suffer through "Paper Sun" off of Euphoria to hear a direct comparison. VC has the first solo, then PC plays the last (4:36?). Night and day to me. Phil is a wanker.

+1 phil collins sucks. But then again imo the only ever good thing about def leopard was vivian campbell.

And btw, vivian +dio= one of the greatest things to ever happen to music.

Have you listened to Viv's last solo album? "Two Sides Of It"
Should have been called "Two Side Of Shit". A blues player he is not.

Steve Clark was the guy who wrote the killer hooks for DL.
As for Phil, I used to dig watching him and Viv live because of the way they would improvise and change up the feel of some classic Lep songs.
I think Viv helped put a more harder edge on the live shows.
But after watching the way Phil butchered his own shit on the YouTube show from the House of Blues the other day, he's regressed considerably.
Someone needs to tell him that running off a shitload of sloppy arpeggios makes you look and sound like an amateur.

I agree that they really are lame. To me, they just seem like a pop band and try way to hard to be cool. They are probably the most cliche thing of the 80s, moreso then bad hair.

And this is comeing from a guy who had a rat tail until i was 15. xD
