No neadliner likes being upstaged, and I've seen dumb openers before ("Trouble" opening for Pantera and Stone Temple Pilots opening for Megadeth), but this is stupid on a new level.
Saw VH on VH II tour. Tickets were double the normal cost for a show at the arena. The opening band were The Cats. We had never heard of The Cats and wondered who they were and where they came from. They were booed off the stage after two songs and a non stop shower of trash and beer. We'd seen better bar bands locally. We were pissed, but thought VH would kick ass and make up for no opening act and an hour and a half wait for VH to come on. Wrong! After an hour of the worst sound we'd ever heard at a show and DLR staggering around the stage not singing we left. Never even been tempted to pay my money to see them since.
Kool and The Gang will put on a great show I'm sure!
not surprised. Steve Lynch was a BEAST with the tapping. Would've made Eddie's 3 note arps seem vanilla following Lynch's 8 finger tapping.
My only issue with Kool & The Gang opening is the number of band members. Aren't there like 8 of them? I hate it when the band impedes my access to the salad bar
Steve Lynch was one of the better tappers I've seen and was doing the piano tapping before anyone else (to my knowledge). His stuff these days is a lot less shreddy and doesn't really do much for me.
Van Halen (along with The Living End) has been my favorite band for years, but I'm not going to see them or their opening band as I won't spend $160 on just OK seats. That's a ridiculous price for tickets and I'll have none of it. I saw Van Hagar twice in 04' (yea, I'm a Sammy fan)and they brought Silvertide as their opening act and they were terrific!
Damn! If he's gonna be that way about it, maybe he should have patented tapping back in the day.
He didn't invent the two handed stuff. In fact I just saw a video from the 1960's with a guy doing two handed tapping stuff. EVH just made it popular and did a lot with it. but invent it he did not.
In the future though I need to remember to not buy guitars while on Nyquil
Steve Hackett of Genesis was one of the first to use tapping in a rock context. The copycat doesn't like being copied himself....Kinda reminds me of Bill Gates suing people for stealing his ideas when he stole the whole thing from someone else in the first place.
I saw VH on their last tour, and if I were going to this years tour it would be to see Kool and the Gang. I thought VH sucked out loud! If they are allowed to do their full-on thing, Kool & the Gang would likely blow VH off the stage.
It's funny when you read old interviews with Ed, he talks about guys he stole licks from and then in the same interview damns anybody that uses any technique he does.
