Tony MacAlpine 2/12/2012, Avalon Night Club, Santa Clara, CA

    Pics:

    Vids:

I'll make this short. I had never heard MacAlpine play until January 2012. Ok, maybe I heard him one someone else's record. I was impressed enough to see this show. 3 opening bands of varying quality. One had a bass player that looked like Howard Stern and Joey Ramone's love child.

Tony played the entire Edge of Insanity record along with a bunch of other songs. I have a pic of the setlist somewhere at the above link. He was awesome. The sound for the opening bands sucked ass. Tony's band's sound was way better. He plays through a Hughes & Kettner head and a 2x12 cab, playing Ibanez 7 and 8 string guitars. I was right up against the stage and everything sounded good. His sound was overdriven but still a bit clean. Every note was super clear. His rhythm guitarist was a bit buried in the mix at times. I don't know if that's because I was at the front of the stage on Tony's side. Drummer Aquiles Priester is phenomenal (check out his drum solo on my YouTube channel). He clearly has Teh Metal in his veins.

In conclusion, a lot of notes, a lot of good music. I bought Tony's latest CD, which is a good mix of metal, prog, and some weirdness, but not Steve Vai self fellating yoga weirdness.

Cool review. Tony is a great guy. His Maximum Security album is still one of my favorite instrumental releases. And earlier today I finally ordered his newest cd from amazon. Can't wait to hear it.
Breaking Point, my all instrumental CD available here:

Tony M. is awesome!!! Saw him way back when his first album came out. Dare I say it was at the East Coast Music Mall in Connecticut. Yes....Ed Roman ran the store at that time. Tony had misplaced his strap and sat for the entire show with just a taped backing band. People were yelling to stand up or ask for the store to get him a strap. He replied that he thought the store manager, Ed Roman, would charge him!!

Ed would have charged him and made replicas and sold them as endorsed straps.

I remember somebody posting a thread on here with the new Ibanez 8 string a few years back and nearly everybody made fun of it including myself. Years later, it's amazing to see how popular and accepted 8 string guitars have become.

T-Mac is a phenomenal player, you're lucky to have seen him play up close and thanks for sharing the vids!
I feel festive all year round. Deal with it.

                    Found the thread:

I CANNOT even believe that thread is from December 2005. I started searching and guessed it was around 2008 or 2009. Cannot believe that has been over 6 years ago!

Avalon is a nice place to see a show. I wanted to go to that show but forgot. Testament is playing there tonight. Should be a blast.

Ok. Now I'm going to Testament tonight.

Bill, Iced Earth was awesome. Stu was great. He hit all the notes on Recreation Day. Pics and vids soon. Symphony X headlined. Good performance but AWFUL guitar sound. Schaefer sounded insanely good.

Saw Tony Mac with Planet X twice (some years back), even met the guy before the show, him and Derek Sherinian, Derek wanted to learn a few french words so he could talk to the crowdé

                              Tony is a phenomal player.

                              Cool pics! Thanks for sharing!
