OK, you are missing the point. Its a statement made for a larger picture of what goes on outside of an artist sphere of creation, not for a specific event of a gilbert performance. The reference to Gilbert is simply that musicians get slagged regardless of skill or history whether it be on a forum or at a bar. I was having lunch with some local musicians, a bassist and a keyboardist about 2-3 months ago. Both gig regularly and FT in cover acts. The conversation came to a topic of guitarists and to Lukather, to which, it seems someone thought less than highly of Lukather and was referring to him as Pukeather.. he didn't elaborate as to why the perception was as such, and I didn't ask. Having seen some of the clips of jams from the 80's, there's something to be said about the seasoning of age in a player as well as how the times have changed. The bar has changed with the advent of so much information being freely available, so younger players will have an edge but I don't look at art/music being a contest altho one can set baselines of what to expect from 'art' as above par. Van Gogh could hardly sell his works while he was alive, but now is another story.Last edited by charvelguy; 05-27-2012, 02:51 PM.

Surely he means Gilbert Gottfried. No way he's talking about Paul Gilbert. Right?

Look at it this way.
By comparison from then to now....
At least his playing isn't as bad as Don's singing.

Ya, I really was thinking that and I forgot to change that after I typed it. (I had to google it on wiki to be sure I had his age right) Glad you know who he is; its a rhaods thang.Resident correction is handy as usual.
Lynch was to do an appearance on The Public Record a couple years back. For unspecified reasons, (*It possibly had something to do with ESP) The deal fell through, but, that happened with a few artists.
Come to think of it. I haven't bought any Lynch album since Sacred Groove, but I at least can watch Youtube bashables. Why I came to argue the point in his favor, well.. its all rather "to much time on my hands"
I just dropped in to do some research.Last edited by charvelguy; 05-26-2012, 02:24 AM.

I definitely think GL has been dealing with some head trips since Dokken. I can also agree with some of the equipment endorsements and money making ventures.
GL is always switching up his gear, as he admits, "I'm a slave to the tone"
The music biz is not always a nice business. People have to make $ to live. It kills people with pressure n addicitons. But I will disagree in the fact that GL can't play. I don't expect him to be on top of the heap outplaying 20-30 'somes, he can still hold his own whether it be in his head or out of it. Its a matter of opinion not a matter of fanship for me.
I have heard other clips in sound checks where GL is in his element, so, jah, I remember the Dokken clip. Don Dokken is the last person that should be giving GL crap, since he's got guys who can do his gig better than him as well, but everyone is their own unique individual, there's only one Don Dokken. Even back in the 80's there were guys slagging Lynch, like Dave Meniketti "sounds like every other guitarist in LA" And Lynch was slaggin Yngiwe as was just about every other critic and guitarist for no heart n soul - goes thru the motions.
When that vid of Ed's late night tune in 5150 aired here, it got slagged 'o shit. So did the 'homeless look' of his party appearance for that flower shop. Schenker went the same route. Same happens with Gilbert at times.

In fact, I'm sure Lynch is aware of younger, and in the element better players are out there, since he held contests and promoted them (at least one guy) on his own recordings by doing call n answer exchanges with them; Sacred Groove - Tierra Del Fuego. He helped them by allowing them exposure.
Condemnable I know. Were just opinions in cyberspace. He's still playing. So, I'll cut him slack if he's a bit flaky here n there. I know I did with Ed.
Hmm, next we can slag Les Paul for gigging every week @ 90 and still doing endorsement ads in his 70's. Comon, its totally doable.Last edited by charvelguy; 05-25-2012, 01:38 PM.

George Lynch despreately needs to follow Eddie's example. I don't know if he's in denial or what, because he plays like shit for far too long. That was not the case with Ed considering he did put out some decent writing in the mid to late 90's..and that one clip of him playing an instrumental (Ed playing all instruments) video at 5150 , all sweaty..was it "Caroline"..a girl's name. That was truly great IMO!. That showed promise. George had no such moment.
My wife got mad at me, like some of you fans in denial. She told me maybe he loves to play and has arthritis forr playing so many years. OK, I can understand that. My wife and I were VIP guest for 'Erase The Slate' w/ Reb. He told me he had alot of respect for George because he had to learn his material..note for note. Which he did, and then some. Don told Clevo John that George was doing alot of damage to himself with hardcore drugs. He didn't elaborate, but said it was extreme. He also said that he fucked with Eddie Van Halen who always wandered in his yard playing guitar..he'd yell at him thru a Megaphone. Ed alys flippin' him off...that's funny.
OK, so let's assume George has did irreversable damage. He ruled his world long ago, and inspired many including me. But let's not be in denial. I don't think he is. He milks his fan/musicians endorsing, desighning, and promoting expensive gear that he doesn't use. One could argue Ed does the same thing..but he uses the gear he promotes. I think it sad to watch anyone past their prime doing whatver they do..sports..music..ect. It's pathetic. Lets face it George puts everything into his playing..he may be on fire, but his playing isn't.
Player like Uli, who's older than George, and younger guys like Jeff Loomis don't break a sweat, but their playing is on fire. Not the other way 'round. It would be like watching George Forman boxing..I'm sure he would work up a sweat, and you could see that he had major skills....had!
I walked out on George Lynch 10 years ago. It was truly pathetic. I've seen him in his prime. The local opening guitarist, one of several, smoked him...and he was just a decent player. I don't even know the fuck. He's not Zaza.
There's a youtube vid of George, Kotzen and Gilbert. If that doesn't convey reality...maybe a kick in the nads would.
