  • The TONE MONSTER!!!!!

    Ok Guys,

Time for some more debate it is getting boring...........Who or try to keep it to three or four have the best tone....not talking about ability but pure tone.........................and yes I am talking about in a rock or metal context....so Endrik be easy on me....................For me it would be in order Brian May, Yngwie Malmsteen(Yes I know I am bias but his tone is killer) and George Lynch

Alcatraz to Marching Out Yngwie. Disillusion to Thunder in the East Akira. More recently I'd say Loomis from say Enemies of Reality on.

^ heh, well i have to agree with Hellbat.
Plus i'll add anything by Michael Schenker, Uli Roth, Eddie, mmm, maybe John Sykes too, and let others add the rest of the obvious ones. ( sorry i soaked up so many in one shot)

Also, Akira never stopped experimenting, albums like Pandemonium have a shit tons of different guitar tones on it. From Grunge, Thrash, to Hendrix. That album probably has more guitar on it and variation in tones than i've ever heard in the metal genre.

I don't know Eddie was never one of the great Tone Masters to me...with the exception of a couple of songs but I am looking for consistency ........Uli or Jake might be a tie for fourth place for me......

I'll stick my foot in the water and say that I really like Zakk Wylde's tones. I know that'll prob get me crucified but oh well. Does seem like a question with no right or wrong answers, but tons of answers that are all a matter of opinion so there's just one of my favs. Maybe as this goes on I'll toss in a few more cents.

I think it's pointless to try and "place" anyone, since it's all subjective. Usually these things are pointless really, with the same names popping up ever single time. We all mostly agree with each other at least on a handful of players at a time. Eddie to not be included is well, it's not a list. He wasn't maybe one of your "tone gods", but he certainly was for millions of players so....i mean did you want to know peoples opinions or did you want to debate. :not sure:

Hell lets put Steve Stevens in the mix...great tone...........and no I would not put Steve above Eddie but close

If you're talking about tone only and not style, my favorites are:
Yngwie Malmsteen: Too many albums to list here, but the last few ones sucked.
Steve Vai: A lot of his stuff but mainly on Passion and Warfare.
Marty Friedman: Dragon's Kiss, Cacophony's Go Off, and his Megadeth era from RIP through Youthanasia.
Kee Marcello: Europe's Out of this World.
                      Chuck Schuldiner: Death's Symbolic
Uli Roth: Unlike any other guitarists I've listened to...
Of course there are too many artists to list here, when it comes to tone, these are the guys that popped into my rusty head.

Oh btw I meet Steve and is by far the coolist guitarist I EVER meet but that is another subject

Metal Maniac..I cometh to chilleth, and to enlighteneth!!!

OK..I'm 48, just before EVH in '78..I was full bore Tony Iommi and Frank Marino. I was 13 and just starting my my lifelong musical path and journey. With that said..I'm sitting here on well over 6000 cds and growing. I constantly listen to write, and play music ..metal...shred..our usual Jackson/Charvel demographic. I prolly went thru more cds, records, casstes and 8 tracks than I own. So I like others have been there from the start.

For me It all strated learning the intro to 'Smoke on the Water'..yeah, how cliche. But what pulled me into the sound of guitar was Tony Iommi when my dad scared the shit outta me with Iron Man when I was 9..the same year The Excocist came out..'73. That was my seed awakeing. I was hooked on those two VERY important sounds and images. They alway went hand and hand. Metal and Horror..Satan ect. Hahhaa..well. My best freind at that time started to play guitar and his uncle had a bunch of records..Jimi this and Jimmy that..but his bought Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush Live '77. During this time Radio was playing Aerosmith, Journey, Heart Boston (that was an impact) Blue Oyster Cult..Then stuff like AC/DC..the BOOOM..I heard a sound that slap me like a wet semi-bone 'cross the face It was Van Halen..I never heard anything like it. The next day I was at a party and a chum brought the new VH !!! I borrowed in then..and I still have it to this day. I showed my guitarist bud who spent day and night learning, cultivating that sound, and playing style..tapping and all. He really nailed it. So I picked up bass and became his bass player. I was bored easily so I did stuff to amuse myself..which is another story. Well years later that bporedom made me a very good player and talk another bassist who was in inGP's Spotlight net to Ritch Kotzen. He played with Greg How, and Paul Gilbert in PA , and Jack Starr's Burning Starr. Varney always arranged all that for everyone. So right into the 80's Tony Iommi Changed his sound/vibe with Dio. Then Ozzy debuted with Randy Rhoads..but meanwhile I was listening to UFO, The Scorpions, The Dokken, Loudness, TNT, Ratt, Rough Cutt. I had a band with a scary player with Gilby's clarke's lil' bro on drums and we covered ALL this stuff..I ask what do want me to learn for my first practice. He rambled off VH..Ratt, Dokken stuff..I knew those already. He said do you know "shy Boy"..He ask If I did. Not yet but we'll play that tommorrow. Next start as we set up , tuned up we went into shyboy the DLR version like we reheared before, It just came together . Oh, we did ALL the guitar player stuff we loved..they show me records, I'd bring some and we were on the same page. So we did Crazy Nights, and Let It go by Loudness, Teslas' Modern Day cowboy, a shitload of Van Halen. Some Accept, UFO, Y&T, Rough Cutt, Thin Lizzy, Ozzy 50%-50% Jake/Randy..I never stopped for a moment to explore and buy Shrapnel , and stuff on my favorite labels at that time. OK..let that ramble go..But I notice since I joined this forum that folks are still tunnel vision on that era. But I kept going...bypassing all trends from disco, to grunge..nu metal...rap metal...all that pop shit. Just doing what I know.

Inpiration from the sound and how and what they played.

So it strated with Jimi > Then Jimmy Page > Tony Iommi > Frank Marino > Eddie Van Halen > Micheal Schenker > Uli Roth > Gary Moore > John Sykes> Yngwie Malmsteen > Akira Takasaki> Tony Macalpine > Greg Howe > Warren DiMartini > George Lynch > Criss Oliva > Tommy Veterlli (TT Baron) > Joey Taffola > Steve Stevens AP, and (V Neil's "exposed") > ...Shrapnel was in constant rotation..Vinnie Moore, Michel Lee Firkins, Marty Freidman, Jason Becker..them bands like Apocrypha..Helstar with Andre Corbin...Jag Panzer with Joey Taffola..then Chris Broderick ..Forbidden ..with Tim Calvert..anything esp Testament with James Murphy..and Alex Skolnik...Coroner really fucked me up..german three piece with amazing tone and playing from "TT Baron"..(Mental Vortex)..very underrated..Jeff Waters with Annhilator. Then a tone beast in the name of Jon Schaffer who took and ran with Heltfield massive tone and roid rage with Maiden Melodies. . Then there was a whole scene happening in Sweden..and that opened the floogates to carp that kids still water down now..But bands like At The Gates, Carcass, Dark Tranquility, Guardinian, Dissecttion, ..that morphed to the Amott Bros and Peter Witcher from Soilwork. Then the crazy finns back in the late 90's with Kalmah, Norther, Skyfire, and know Childern of Bottom..Synergy. Then you have many many nods to player like Magnus Karlsson, Tore Moren, Olaf Lenk, Jorn Viggo Lofstad, Mike Romeo...Dime kept metal crunchin' when most declered it dead. When Fred Durst was on the cover to GW..Dime was inside..with Zakk. To me Zakk has the best tone in Ozzy's camp. He's a major player with tru convicyion and confidence. When he plays you know it's him..just as idetifiable as those mentioned above. Oh..Brad Gillis '82 SOTD..

But I found the new breed in '96 with a humble, shy dud Jeff Loomis. I was tellin' how to eat ass for about an hour before I heard him play to a pretty dead venue. He went on there ..he was ny new Eddie Van Halen.. I was soul searchin' with my style still rooted in the 80's VH vibe. I didn't want to play like that and I'm not a blues player by no means. But I'm fast mean, and play with fire...He was the epitome of this.

Then Uli has been continuing hard word, and refining himself.and plays better than he ever had. He can walk you thru any favorite old riff you want like nothing..but he's kinda bored with those. He loves to compose classical music like Vivaldi's 4 seasons. Which leaves some unsettles between Metal Maniac and I. I will post Uli recent classical work and compare it to some of Yngwie's very best chosen by his loyal fans. I was the topic of classical and playing with unchallenged dynamics..something like that.

But Tone..I was never a huge fan of SRV. That kinda style. But He was amazing..his tone was huge. Guys like him Robin Trower..yeesh. We could be here all day. Some of the old Prog guys like Steve Hacket, Alex Lifeson, Robert Fripp, Allen Holdsworth..Jeff Beck.

                            I'll be back..eventually.

                            F the typos...deal with 'em..fuggums.
