EVH, John Sykes, Trevor Rabin, and Mick Mars has the most crushing live tone I've ever heard, IMO.

nice! Trevor Rabin does get a unique and often changing tone that sounds good no matter what texture he's using.
He's done alot of movie soundtrack work as well. a ton of it.
Not helping the situation since 1965!

session players, all the way up the the ladder to the hardest of rock and everything in between.
For example- I love Elliot Easton's tone and playing, but on this board, he does not apply. I listen to everything,
although the thread idea is great, it's too vast for me.
Metal Maniac, I must inform you that it is a board custom to get finger blasted by Bill. There's an "inner circle" on this board, haaa! more like inner brown circle in this case, and although never admitted, many have had this done and become brothers, I of course was given a pass on the ordeal, but I can smell Bill's finger
in cleveland all the way out here in huntington beach haa haaa!!!

            oh my!

I always look at movie credits to see who wrote the soundtrack if I think it has some really cool stuff in it, and more often than not it credits him. I got to see him with Yes on the Union tour (Pittsburg, iirc), with Steve Howe too, and it was AMAZING!

When I was at work yesterday, I put on some old Savatage, and I totally forgot how "GODly" Chris's tone was/is, a kick ass metal tone, not rock but pure freakin Metal...

Nuno Bettencourt, Jeff Loomis (he should've been in Megadeth IMO) and Vinnie Moore are also on my masters list.

I've seen a million rock shows and opened up for a bunch of great 80's bands. After all that, my vote goes to a relatively obscure player - Jon Levin the guy now playing in Dokken. His live tone is friggin HOT!!! Opened for RATT a few years ago when they were doing the tour where they played the entire Out of the Cellar album, Warren was a close second. And the other guy that has superb live tone is Reb Beach, and man that dude can shred.

live his tone is so much better than in the studio. I always thought live Mick and Tommy carried that band.

Thank you! If I'd have brought Dime's name into this I would have been hit with 1,000 cliche's then probably told that his tone sucked, so instead I waited for someone else to throw it out there. Like him or not though, his tone is instantly recognizable and still stands the test of time.

thats because Nikki and Vince were too busy trying to be Steel Panther.

I dunno. Dime gets lots of props for his leads and stuff but I find his rhythm playing is what made him more unique. The only solo of his that I find really memorable is "We'll Meet Again" and that when they were emerging from hair band status. That said I always found his rhythm tone a little oversaturated. Maybe I associate that with his solid state head days or something, I don't know. To be honest I don't know their material inside and out because I didn't dig the singer much.
