Maybe I associate that with his solid state head days or something, I don't know. To be honest I don't know their material inside and out because I didn't dig the singer much.
What!! Phil was awesome for the type of music......plenty of gravel in the throat and angry....just right for the music..........This Love.....Fuckin' Hostile......Walk........Mouth for War....etc.....

Paul Gilbert, John Sykes, Scott Ian and Doug Aldrich, amongst many others (George Lynch, Chuck Schuldiner, Andy LaRocque, Jeff Beck, Marty Friedman...), seem to nail tones I love consistently.

Dime's live tone wasn't as good as in the studio. I hadn't seen damage plan, but by the end of the pantera era his live tone was very trebly and sometimes almost painfully shrill. granted it cut thru the mix but it wasn't what i would call great tone at all.

Having heard and seen them live and up close on many occasions, I have to say that what you heard probably had more to do with the mix at the board, PA selection, and venue acoustics than his tone at the amp. Sure, the sound guy may be a pro, but I'd venture to say we've all played in places where the PA sucked ass and the acoustics were even worse. A person can only do so much with gear. Sometimes all you can do is the best you can and make the best of it.

                  VAN FUGGIN" HALEN!!!!

The ONE fuggin' song we busted balls on at practice . In '95, Our DLR-clone cut it from our set. He called the shots. But it worked.

When I played Van Halen songs since they were new, and had to do it all week and weekend. Ya get SUPER sick of 'em. But years later, to hear them again is magic. I would pay 200 buck to see this up close and personal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jj1Qa...feature=fvwrel

Light Up The Sky, and this song.

Jorn Viggo Lofstad (Jorn Lande, Pagan's Mind) has one of the all around best heavy metal tones I've heard lately. For the ultimate modern metal rhythm tone: Rich Ward.
