Clapton never said anything it was meant to be a joke! But guys like Mayer have been playing the same regurgitated pentatonic E minor crap forever! I don't know about everybody else on here but I actually have a degree in music and I can honestly say I was tired of and completely bored to death with that mode by the time I was twelve. As a good friend of mine once said " It's not new." In my opinion it's just fuckin tired as hell. I also don't understand how these guys who claim to be so into playing and trying to do something new keep managing to do the same shit over and over again. It's the same as listening to Stevie Ray Vaughan or Joe Bonamassa or Kenny Wayne Sheppard. They all do the same stuff over and over again. In my opinion Hendrix was the last guy who did anything new in that genre.

This is what I think of Gibson since 1993. I HATE BEING LEFT HANDED! I rock out to Baby metal because Wilkinsi said I can't listen to Rick Astley anymore.

I dislike him so much I won't even read the thread. Just a sissy with a guitar and his EVH tribute was an embarrassment to watch.

I really don't get the Mayer hate. I really liked his room for squares album, but I guess I'm in the minority.

I don't get it either. Dude actually plays his instrument (plays it well too, for what it's worth), writes his own songs & actually performs. No auto-tune. I'm not a fan of his singing (or the faces he pulls while he does it), but he is actually doing it, in front of audiences that appreciate what he does. He's not to my taste, but that's fine. I just don't listen to him.

Maybe the haters prefer the off-tune caterwauling & gang choruses of 80s hair metal. Or the down-tuned over the top gain & triggered drums of modern metal. Or maybe they like auto-tuned pop, because the hook is king & it's more important that everything is in tune than for the musicians to have any talent. Maybe it's all about MaXXXimum Brootalz - waving your dick on internet forums about who listens to the heaviest shit, man. Or they might prefer Real Metal, with songs about metal, being Metal, being Warriors of Metal, with our broadswords, oiled chests & loincloths, remaining true to metal, because that is right & just & the way of the true defenders of metal. RAARRR.

But whatever, man. This bluesy stuff that Mayer plays, it's not new

@VitaminG; You're right about the fact that he does it clean with no auto tune and does it well. I just don't personally like his style of music. You're also right about the fact that as much as I dislike Mayer I would rather be at one of his concerts than a rap concert. But......"It's still not new." Sorry bro!

sure, it's not new. But what is? Most of the old farts around the JCF wish it was still 1983. They wish they were still rocking up to a Crue concert wearing mascara, with fishnets up their arms. Or in skinny jeans & hightops at a Metallica gig. They just about shit the bed when a young band actually plays some "proper" metal ie. releases a CD of generic thrash like the thousands of Big 4 wannabes were playing circa '89. And whining that their favourite old bands won't just regurgitate their classic album with each new release (classic, defined by whatever album the band released when the whiner first discovered them - hence the Peace vs Rust, MOP vs Black album arguments all over the internet). An older band grow, evolve or just get less angry then they were when they were 22, a quarter century ago? Never!

There's a constant nostalgia around here, of old farts remembering how much better it was back when. Musicians were better, songs were better, groupies were better, solos were better, gear, beer & gigs were better & cheaper. Now get off my lawn!

I'm not a big fan of his songs. My wife is the fan in the family, but I'll go see his shows because he's a pro performer with great live sound and a super deeply talented band behind him. Plus there is enormous amounts of sluttily dressed young women at his shows so even if I'm not feeling the gig, I'm feeling something.
