  • SAIGON KICK - Last Night

Saw a 3/4 reunited SK (orig bass player left shortly after reforming the band) @ Viper Room. Went on at 10-ish and played for about 90 minutes, playing material from the first two albums plus "Dear Prudence". A very good show! Matt's vocals were good considering he's 40+, and he is a charismatic performer. He talked/joked with the crowd in between songs - the crowd responded well. Anyways, about Jason's gear: Schecter tele-shaped guitar, dual hummers, string-through bridge. He mentioned that they sent him that guitar and that he wanted fret inlays or dots on the neck to see where he was playing. He used this guitar the whole night - no back-ups. (I wanted to see that old white ESP he used to have but, oh well.) He would just tune down the low E for the Dropped D songs. Easier then switching guitars all night, huh? He was stage right but his Marshall half-stack was next to the bassist Chris's rig, stage left. It sounded like he was going through the house PA (I'm guessing - I don't know that much about FOH mixing and stuff...) His overall tone was just a bit muddy but not ridiculous. I could hear the chords distinctly. The full band mix was decent. When he would go into solo, it always sounded quiet at first and then I could hear the level come up a bit. And sometimes the level didn't come up that much. Sucks because I wanted to hear his solos crystal clear and they were a bit subdued on a few of the songs. Many of his solos are on the neck pickup. BUT, he ripped. He pulled off all of his licks like I expected and switched his solos up a bit. Only got a brief glimpse of his floor rig after the show. Didn't see any pedals (he was already packing up his gear when I peaked in).

This was the first time I saw SK, I missed them 20+ years ago. Glad I went, glad they put it back together.

jason is using an axe-fx for the tour. the guitar half-stack is a part of the bassists rig. i saw them in st. pete with the VIP package and asked about their gear. i was sorely disappointed that jason wasn't using a rivera since he inspired me to get all of mine.
    GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

    and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

Ah. I don't know what an axe-fx is. Out of the loop on rigs and gear...
*Just read up on the axe-fx. Got it. Makes sense because he would go fiddle with an fx unit after each song.

      Thanks for the info, markD.

yeah, I thought his sound was pretty muddy - especially compared to his tone throughout the 90s. I saw SK several times from the "lizard" tour up through "devil in the details", and he always sounded best with the ESP guitars and the rivera amps. his best sound was when he was using the TBR-2SL and rivera Q-cabs along with an ESP mirage V-style. later on when he switched to the marshall jubilee, the sound was good but not as powerful.

Yeah, his tone on those albums was epic. Especially the Dropped D strumming on "Hostile Youth". Nice and thick.

oh, for sure! his early live tone was monstorous too. a couple week back when i saw them, the first thing i noticed was how 'fake' the tone sounded. it seemed to have a sterile fizz. as the night wore on, and my ears adjusted to it, it mostly came across as muddy. earlier, during the VIP experience when he and i were talking tones - specificaly the rivera sound - he assured me that the axe-fx delivered the goods. he said it was easy to travel with and that his tone would more consistent across venues. he also said that the axe-fx sounded different with his schecter than with mouradian custom strat he made the programs with. ironically, the schecter is just a $500 PT!!!! a diamond series!!!! my wife liked it, so i will probably get one soon....

Nice! I've always loved SK, saw them once on the Water tour. They're playing NYC on the 11th, but not sure if I'll be able to make it or not.

I've been a fan of Saigon Kick for years, and I've never had a chance to see them live... I'm guessing that they won't be coming to England any time soon so I don't suppose that'll change :/

I love Jason Bieler's playing, he can shred but there was a bit more to his solos than a lot of his contemporaries - check out the solos in The Lizard, All Alright and The Way; just perfect

I seem to remember Matt Kramer left because he and Jason fell out big style? I wonder if they'll make another album...

They're worth checking out, don't expect much from Matt's vocals; I was a bit let down. Despite Jason's current live sound, he still cranks on those solos. Such an aggressive player.
