  • David Bowie - Modern Love video - Strathead Soloist?

Seen this recently a couple of times on VH1Classics. Is the guitarist using a Strathead Soloist? Ferrari Red, painted neck back, looks like a San Dimas control cavity cover.

    0:13 seconds into the video

It looks like it may even be a Strat, since it appears there's a neckplate (I see what appears to be a reflection flash in the first part of the clip, where he's running out and holding the guitar by the neck/body joint. Could just be YT artifacting, though).

I guess I could put out the effort to research the guitarist in question, then what gear he used, but meh..

I'm pretty sure that's Earl Slick with a DiMarzio guitar...

Nice. I know Charvel made DiMzo-labeled bodies for a while, so that would explain the SD-looking route.

I thought it looked like a pink HM Strat. I honestly couldn't tell only that it had a Strat head.
            It's pronounced soops

That's exactly what it is. I built a replica several years ago out of old Dimarzio parts:

Ah, I see. Didn't notice the neckplate until I was looking for the backplate shot in the video (basically the only time you really see the guitar) and was hung up on the painted neck. I forgot DiMarzio also had painted boards (still can't figure out why).

It's actually no different than a regular maple Strat neck. The red is a translucent stain and then it's clear coated. It's not a solid paint finish.
Dimarzio did a lot in pink as well
