Important Message from the Jeff Loomis BandPublished April 15, 2013 | By Ms. A
Last night after our show in St. Louis, our tour van was broken into as we were grabbing a bite to eat before our drive to Dallas. We were parked in a well-lit area in front of the restaurant. In the ten to fifteen minutes that it took for us to order our food and eat, all of our personal items such as laptops, cameras, musical equipment, cell phones, passports and money were stolen. We came outside to find the lock on the driver side door popped out of the van, and promptly called the police. A report has been filed and the van was fingerprinted, but the leads don’t seem promising. The police stated that this is apparently a common occurrence in the area. We are all in disbelief, but are very fortunate for everyone to be okay.
After discussing the situation as a group, we would like to try to continue on with this tour, but to be able to do this, we will need your help. We have all taken a huge hit financially, and we cannot continue on without some sort of support. We have set up a paypal account for any amount of donations to assist us for the duration of the tour.
Below is the PayPal e-mail to make donations to.
    [email protected]
Any and all support will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Jeff Loomis Band and crew

Boy, what does it say about making a living as a musician that getting some of your gear stolen is enough to cause a tour to get cancelled?

Donations? How about insurance? Something doesn't add up...

I too am surprised that someone with his experience does not have insurance on his gear.

They probably do but it would take too long to get the insurance company to pay up to replace equipment.

Besides, Insurance does not cover items stolen from a automobile. If it was stolen from his house, he has a claim. Also, he'll need receipts and what not as well.

I am willing to bet Schecter would be able to get a new fiddle into Jeff's hands fairly fast, but what other members of the band have endorsement relationships? Probably none of them.

Why doesn't this ever happen to lame pop artists?

You can get insurance on pretty much anything though cant you? Sure, homeowners won't cover it but has to be some way to do it.

Paypal account for donations? Interesting to say the least.

Anyone verify the legitimacy of this? Sounds like a scam.

So now word is none of the amps or instruments were stolen - cash, laptops, passports/docs were though.

To clear things up, the guitars and amps are safe. They are fine on that end, but the money that was stolen is what sustains the tour.

Thank you again for all your help and support. It really means a lot to the guys.
Parked right in front of the restaurant, too - must've pulled-up alongside the van and got off with as much as they could quick as possible. Damn thieves, they deserve to have their hands cut-off - at the least.

Wouldn't you keep all the cash on you at all times? Especially band cash?
8 strings? Because 6 is too easy?

I'm glad to hear the gear is safe. Even so, this is probably a good opportunity to discuss insurance options for musicians.
Emperor_Black is correct that a homeowner's policy will not cover this. Even if it did, most homeowner's policies have limits on how much coverage they will provide for things like musical instruments and jewelry. The last time I checked my policy, this limit was $1K.
You can get a personal articles policy on your gear. This is usually pretty cheap, and there is no deductible when you need to file a claim. However, this will not cover you if something happens when you are playing a gig. The reasoning for this is that most environments where you would be performing are also considered high risk environments by insurance companies. The personal articles policy is really for someone like me who just plays and records at home.
Back when I did play out, I used MusicPro Insurance. I never had to file a claim with them, so I can not speak to how well that works, but this company is meant for working musicians. If you are playing gigs, you should check this company out.

Although you can increase the limits with most home owner or renter insurance almost all have pro exclusions meaning if you make any income with anything insured it's not covered. Musicpro and Heritage insurance both have plans designed for the pro musician as well as the hobby gig once in a while musician that covers the gear no matter where it is which includes transit. Definitely worth looking into if you take gear out and about.
