As for that photo it is his wifes shopping back! He is just the gentleman holding it! He said that in an interview.

Yes they have done an acustic gig around '98 or something as I recall. I got the bootleg somewhere.

But the thing with Metallica is the fact that the song writing was not there exept hit the lights which were 2 songs/riffs or so put together. They played covers and if it was not before Mustaine was in the band they started writing and shaped the Kill'em'all material or no life to leather demo.

Dave did not want them to use his songs but changed a bit and did anyway as they did not have any other choice at that time.

Then Cliff Burton and the move to Frisco happend which helped a lot of the musical direction as Cliff was the only true musician. By the time of the writing of the black album and onwards the writing suffers greatly. It shows everytime and that is why Metallica sounds like they do.

Dave and Cliff where the main inputs for the song writting without it is James and Lars with a degree of Kirk. More of Kirk during the Load area. Jason got 3 writing credits in total or so. He was not seen as being valid enough in the writing. Also Lars is a bit more open minded on a musical level and not as sturbon so whatever non metal influences directs Metallica's music as if Cliff had been there.
