  • Rokken With Dokken

Went last night (Sat, Feb 1). Overall, a very good show. Don had issues with his in-ear monitors and then just pulled them out by the third song. Embarrassed the house sound guy, too. Thought it was a little harsh but the sound guy should know how to boost the volume for the singer.
Seems like Mixing 101. Don was still able to sing on key. He also played guitar for a few songs, too. Looked like an old Strat or copy, played through a Marshall half-stack and head.
Jon played one guitar the whole night - a black and white Charvel through two Marshall half-stacks with Marshall heads. Couldn't see his back-up guitar or pedal board from where we sat. His guitar signal went out on one song for about 30 seconds but his guy went behind the amps and fixed the problem. He sounded great and shredded on every song. He does Lynch better than Lynch. Also throws in pinch harmonics with big vibratos, Floyd dive bombs and some EVH-like tapped harmonics along the neck.
Sean McNabb played the same bass for the whole show. His tone was also very good and is a nice addition to the band. Good bassist. Don't remember his rig very well - I think he had a Gallien Kruger cabinet.
Wild Mick is Wild Mick. After every song he'd scream something like "Make some fucking noise!" Him and Don would crack jokes in between songs.

Didn't know what to expect but I am glad I went. Haven't seen them in maybe 13 years or so. Don's voice held up pretty well considering his age. Can't hit those high notes and he got a bit raspy at times but it wasn't distracting because you expect it. The band sang back up on most songs to help out and sounded very good and tight. The sound was mixed well despite Don's monitor problems. They did the hits, of course, but I was hoping for more songs off of "Lightning Strikes Again". "Erase The Slate" or "Maddest Hatter" would've been cool, too- both killer songs with Reb.
Here is a set list from what I remember, not really in order:
    Kiss Of Death (open)
    Breaking The Chains
    The Hunter
    Into The Fire
    Just Got Lucky
    Alone Again
    This Fire
    Empire
    It's Not Love
    In My Dreams (close)
    Tooth and Nail (encore)

Might be a couple more that I forgot...

Go see 'em if they come to your town - I think you'll enjoy it.
8 strings? Because 6 is too easy?

Well, that must be Don's "Schtick" on stage to cover the fact that he really doesn't sing very well anymore. I saw them 2 years ago and he did EXACTLY the same thing with the in ear monitors and the sound guy. He complained he couldn't hear. He kept asking how we thought they were doing. To my ears.. he sounded like Lemme from Motorhead at times. Very raspy and he couldn't hit any of the high notes. He didn't even try. The band sounded great. Jon is a great player.

+1 Don is douche. He alienated half the band so much that George and Jeff won't even speak his name anymore. I agree that the band he has around him now is great but I saw him do the same shit to a sound guy that jgcable and you mentioned. His best days vocally are definitely behind him.
This is what I think of Gibson since 1993. I HATE BEING LEFT HANDED! I rock out to Baby metal because Wilkinsi said I can't listen to Rick Astley anymore.

We opened for them a few times here. 2006, don was so wasted it wasnt even funny, in between songs he kept yelling "any of you fathers out there gotta pay a shitload of child support like me? happy fathers day!" and then downed pretty much an entire bottle of jack during their set. Needless to say, he SUCKED.

Next time was us, dokken, cinderella headlined. Cinderella sounded perfect, amazingly. Don couldnt sing AT ALL. Everything was an octave low, and half of that not on pitch. And, he and his manager were fucking dicks. Kicked everyone out of the backstage area after their set cuz don needed to "relax". This was in 09.

2010, we opened again, Don was not a dick, just sucked. lol.

        John levin smokes, tho.
Its a complete catastrophe. But Im a professional, I can rise above it. LOL

Don Dokken should just hang it up already. He used to have a great voice, now he sucks. Vince Neil has finally decided to retire... and he never was that great to begin with!

            Hahahahahaha!!!!!
I want to go out nice and peaceful in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming and hollering like the passengers in his car.

Vince isn't retiring. He will tour solo until the day he dies.

Oh, guess that's just Crue. His voice has more than sucked for at least fifteen years now, and he doesn't even remember half the words to his songs anyway, so he should just give it up altogether...

+1 He knows the words bro he just doesn't have the wind to sing the songs anymore and that's surprising coming from a wind bag like Vince. Never been a fan of his vocals.

Making a scene over sound issues on a regular basis....very unprofessional.

Does he not have his own sound crew?

                    Does he not do soundchecks?

He should be addressing sound issues before the show begins. For people with experience, it shouldn't take but a song or two to get it setup during soundcheck.

Jon must have the patience of a saint to put up with this. I noticed he doesn't really get involved with Don's antics on stage. Plus, Don is pushing 60. Isn't he a little old to be acting like this?

Don had a cool voice and they were pretty good live in their prime, but his vocal always struck me as kind of fragile, like if he pushed it too hard it would crack and he couldn't reach the note.

Probably should have hung it up awhile ago based on recent reviews, but really, what would he do? Valet work at the LA hard rock?

Larz, I've read/heard that he has to pay a lot of child support. So, he's clearly not wise enough to wrap up when he's with a chick. Seems like a self-destructive guy.

Don always made me think he should be singing songs like Michael Bolton, Richard Marx, or other "adult FM-style" singers should be crooning. He was too "smooth" for rock IMO. Luckily he had GL for cred.

No, vocally, I thought he really brought it on Back For The Attack. (George was at his peak on that album and Wicked Sensation, IMO.) But I always liked Don's vocals back then. For all his apparent faults as a person, he still gives you his full effort live, even if he gets raspy.

*Off topic, Vince runs out of breath or just doesn't care much anymore. Not sure I'm gonna pay to see the "farewell" tour.
