  • YJM and Vai - Generation Axe

The shred-off that we all wanted to see back in about '87!

And yet, if you know your scales, there is not a single thing that either of them plays that you can't do.
    I really hate "predictable" music.

Yeah, I went last Monday night in L.A. I dug it. Zakk walked up the aisle and shredded Little Wing - I got it on my phone. Everybody played great. The backing band was very good, too. Go see the show.
8 strings? Because 6 is too easy?

Black Star was a revelation for me when it was first released (i had never heard Uli), but TBH, now i find it kinda boring. The only Yngwie album i still listen to is "Marching Out", as i like that the soloing is kept short and to the point in vocal tunes (other than the awesome title track).
I did enjoy Steve's first solo in this performance.

Either I've been smoking drugs or you have. SOMEONE is fucking high.

The worst thing about that song is the fact Barrie Barlow played drums on the album and sounded like a drum machine. The guy is the best drummer in prog rock ever, yet sounded like a machine on that first YJM album.

I've never liked the drums on that, and it always struck me as a strange choice. It sounds to me like he didn't really want to do the session, and just phoned it in.

Has anyone even made the connection:

A classical musician that tries to play electric blues --- and Steve Vai.

if only someone would make a movie like that

I'm sure he said Malmsteen told him how to play and he had to do it since it was a paid gig - session work basically. Doesn't surprise me, since Malmsteen is all about his boring widdling.

Yngwie, spent a lot of time prancing around and throwing his guitar in the air. And played too fast - not much articulation. I guess since he can play his songs in his sleep...

I fell asleep during the sustained note part with the cheesy check your watch moves.... Did I miss anything

I'll never lose my sense of amazement at how relaxed and economic Yngwie's right hand is. It's funny, Steve's right hand isn't up to par. Whenever he rips the fast stuff it's all left hand legato. With Yngwie, 3/4ths of the notes at least are picked.

Lame or not, I pretty sure I'd consider trading my left nut to be doing what they're doing- getting paid to play guitar and be guitar icons.
